what guam needs

okay enough about the complaining. clearly one could write volumes of what this island needs. but i am almost certain the following would benefit the island in more ways than one.

fountain.jpg

first of all, a real water feature. you might have visited civic spaces with a walkable water feature. it draws people and beautifies public space. it just makes sense...with all the unused open space along busy foot traffic areas, especially in tumon, a water feature would be the perfect way to elevate the scene and let the kids release their aggression elsewhere. pictured here is a water feature we stealthily raided at the leo palace. i say this because i'm not sure if it was even meant for walking. i took the boys there one weekend and they were pleasantly surprised when i told them to jump in and walk through the fountains. guam just needs more public spaces in general but i can see there is potential. there was a skate park recently erected in dededo that has been more than a success despite a related tragedy close to the site that happened shortly after it opened. every night, it is filled to the rim with kids and it's great that they are here instead of somewhere questionable.

redflex.jpg

secondly, this island needs to install photo enforcement devices at all major intersections. when i first blogged about these alien-like structures that popped up in union city, i was dreading their presence. but they bring in insane amounts of revenue, keep people from blazing through red lights, and ease the manpower required to keep our streets safe. to add to that...it's always entertaining to watch people get caught.

yelp me

late last year, i signed up for yelp and vowed to remain an active participant in sharing my experiences. and if you ever peep my flickr, often times i'll include pictures of my meals with the intent of adding a review later. i've added two new reviews this week and perhaps you'll bookmark my reviews for future use. have a visit to the link above.

here is an excerpt from my last review of Colors Restaurant Red.

Colors Restaurant RED

Category: Restaurants

I admire the efforts of the owners and the chef that have passionately pursued this undertaking - bringing gourmet fusion cuisine and high-end casual dining to the heart of Tumon. Colors Restaurant RED is situated at the Acanta Mall - the colorful landmark that's survived in spite of economic and trend-inspired struggle in recent years. It will definitely bring new life across the board for those looking for something new and willing to spend the money. The prices definitely aren't far reaching but I must say, $50 for lunch for a party of 2 is quite unconventional around here. I'm sure they were going for anything but conventional when they envisioned this place. Again, it is a new business and I would have to give them some flexibility when someone like me is looking for perfection at their first operational week.

I've tried their lunch - which is a set menu of 4 courses for $21 and you get unlimited iced tea, an appetizer/salad bar, an entree, and a dessert. I've also had happy hour here on several occasions since they've opened and enjoyed the ambiance and the friendly staff. I wish happy hour had actually happy hour specials to make it happier. I wish the bartender knew how to make a mojito the right way and in the right glass. I wish they had asked me before they blended my margarita if I wanted it on the rocks. I am excited that they have breakfast and brunch offerings because since the cafe in this shopping center closed, I've got nowhere to walk to for sunday indulgences of eggs benedict or waffles.

The operating hours are very ambitious - 8am to midnight daily, and until 2am on fridays and saturdays. I have yet to try dinner but am waiting until I have more money to splurge and some people who will be willing to give it a try. I can imagine the local vernacular won't be quick to respond but I'm sure Colors will make it through the newness of it all. They promise to have local entertainment and pride on a daily changing menu, which I am hoping they will provide some means to be updated - such as a daily updated website.

The space is grand and gives a modern industrial aesthetic but I wish they were more agressive and playful with the design....but all this coming from someone in the Architecture industry.

I would like to come back and add stars when it is in full swing and I am fully convinced about their food. The one day I had lunch there, the entrees were not living up to the way they had described it. It was dry and cold and unoriginal in taste.

only on guam

i posted this awhile ago on one of my other blogs...resurrecting it because i have a few more to add

no recycling bins
- it would be so easy to have additional receptacles dedicated for cans, bottles, and paper but i haven't seen any so far. there are minor efforts in schools and local recycling centers available but the issue is not pressed enough...plastic bags, styrofoam containers, and over-use of paper is a morbid habit around here

red lights
- people just pass them at their own liking. not just red lights - but plowing through stop signs and crosswalks with children and tourists in sight...and in the pouring rain or the dark of night - sometimes, both.

men who honk
- i like to go walking, running and they honk, holler, hail. it's strange that they think this would render some kind of response. am i in your way? am i expected to leap in excitement?

lunch time - everyone loves to go out to lunch. it's the highlight of the day for everyone, but its such a huge undertaking. i prefer to eat alone but it seems its a rare sight. and to go in a large group - choraling the effort and being done means almost 2 hours of your work day just went down the drain

nowhere to dance - i don't understand why there's nowhere "cool" to dance when you're older than 21. you have to be gay, 18 years old, a ballroom dancer, or in the military to be in this scene. i just want to dance with a straight guy to some hip hop music. there's none of that either.

hip hop music - hip hop is dead. i'm talking jurassic 5, tribe called quest, method man, nas...even jay z, biggie, pac...they are nowhere popular. you only hear current radio club bangers and everyone's taste in music is dictated by what the 5 radio stations are playing every hour. i would love to have a reliable place to listen to music that i haven't been listening to all day long and where i don't feel like i have to shake my booty to show that i'm enjoying it.

phones without voicemail
- most people with cell phones have no voicemail and the automated responses are usually "there's no answer. goodbye" or "the mobile customer you have dialed is unavailable". this sucks. i love leaving messages and i feel like a stalker if my number shows up so many times because "hello, i'm trying to get a hold of you and i'd really like to tell you why". and those with voicemail...rarely check their messages or don't even bother with customizing their greeting. most times, i can't tell or forget who i've dialed by the time i hear the "beep".

no dating scene
- there's absolutely NONE. you have to scope out someone from afar first and somehow work your way out of anonymity to actually talk to a man. and even when you stumble upon a man...you realize there really is no such thing as anonymity. i thought dating is supposed to be about going out with someone you could get to know. and far worse...it might have to be arranged through other people. and please...don't bother "hooking me up"

meddlers - everything is everyone's business. people want to know what's going on even it is completely irrelevant and they want to tell you what to do. but the cashier, the woman at the gym, your coworker....they all want to get up in your business.

gas stations - i can never get it right. you pay inside? pay outside? there are stickers? passports? is it really self serve? i just want to pump my own gas but apparently this is not as simple as it sounds. why do they have credit card keypads that don't work? so far, only 76 lets use my credit card the way it should.

smokers - i'll still love you if you smoke but EVERYONE smokes!! i feel so uncool. i'm actually conditioning myself to handle the smokers just so i can keep the conversation going and not be left alone inside every time it's time for a smoke break, which happens to be every ten minutes.

groceries - specialty items like fresh produce, decent cheese, pita pockets...do not come stocked regularly. why on earth can't i find any decent mint to make my mojitos!?? why on earth do i have to go to 10 stores to cook what i want to cook? why do i have to go 3 counters to use a check? why don't they ever allow cashback? why don't they have self checkout? really, no bar code? "oh god, i have artichoke hearts and they don't know what they are".

fine wine - it's hard to find a good glass of wine. okay, it's there but it costs me an arm and a leg. fetzer and beringer are above $10 so even cheap wine is too much. every restaurant has the same selection. "oooh kendall jackson and robert mondavi are premium, all of a sudden".

shopping - i'm not much of a shopper but if i wanted to buy one thing, i'd have to spend all afternoon looking for one thing and this goes against my productivity levels. there's just not much selection to begin with. i find myself spending all afternoon at ross just so i don't feel defeated.

dog poop - there's just too much of it laying around. i'm hoping its from stray dogs and not from people not picking up after their dogs. but i dont' see any stray dogs.

toilet seat covers - why is it not standard to have toilet seat covers in toilet stalls? there are a few establishments with them (house of brutus, sheraton, sam choy's, to name a few)...but i'd really like to NOT have to pop a squat when i pee.

billpay
- i've griped about this repatedly...but i hate not having the option of online billpay. there are numerous receipts, coupons, stamps and initials involved to pay one bill. take a number, have a seat, enjoy the company of the woman in front of you holding her 2 year old and forget about lunch or getting back to the office because it will take you all day.

roadkill - roadkill capital of the world...dead dogs, frogs, snakes, cats are an eyesore and even harsher on your olfactory nerve.

speeding - it's raining like a monsoon and people are driving at least 20 miles over the speed limit. this is a residential road with potholes and speedbumps galore and they are breezing by. i live at the bottom of a steep incline and i feel like i could die standing outside my building entrance.

customer service - common courtesy practices, return policies, helpful personnel - are these archaic requests that are too much to ask?

the bank and the post office - why are there always long lines here?...no matter what time of day? don't you people need to get back to work? don't you people have atm cards to do your transactions elsewhere? don't you people hate this as much as i do?

RENT review

Being involved on the production side, I might be inclined to give a biased review of the show. But if I told you that I've never even actually seen the show on Broadway (or on any stage) or even watched the movie in it's entirety...I was certainly captivated. This feat should not be understated - with the limited amount of resources, the local talents pulled together to bring the professional-grade production that they aimed to deliver.

All the acting roles, most especially the male leads which included Mark (Richard Vergara), Roger (Julius Cesar Santos), Angel (Ernest Ochoco), and Collins(Karl Pangelinan), brought strong and consistent performances. Conversations that followed would confirm that the ladies which played Maureen stole the show, giving unexpected and highly-impressionable performances, both vocally and dramatically. Maureen's "Over The Moon" protest scene was the most memorable piece for all four evenings.

Where the drawbacks fell were with sound, seating, lighting, and possibly even logistics. But what's great about RENT is that all factors were easily pardoned once engaged with the plot and message that attributes to the success of this modern-day rock-opera.

The indirect message to be learned from this experience - the island needs more outlets for fostering the arts. While the primary message of this production was for AIDS awareness under the umbrella of Guahan Project and Conscious Living, there is much to be said about the bohemian aspect of it (another underlying theme of RENT). Clearly there is a genuine interest in the arts on this island and it's unfortunate that this is often suppressed. People easily dismissed the show and didn't pay attention until the very end, only to discover that it was a sold-out venue. The allowable seating was reduced on the venue-owner's behalf and this was beyond the control of the organizers. However, the smaller and more intimate setting gave way to a better viewing experience.

Regardless, no caliber of such has been achieved here and it was an inaugural step across the board for everyone involved and for everyone who witnessed it.

modern

yesterday i attended an architects' discussion over lunch and the tiresome topic of the military buildup was brought up. and i'm sitting there irked at the number of reasons that it's being met with reluctance. it's not a mystery the people of guam inherently cling to their traditions. the highly anticipated influx being forced upon every vein of existence will greatly affect our landscape. already our streets are doted with dilapidated buildings and underutilized land. to say that over-building is irresponsible would be an understatement. the duty of an architect as a designer on this island is almost non-existent. here, we are merely problem solvers who are builders. my job managing these projects has exposed me to the very nature of this industry and the drawbacks of ambition. i think of responsibility and good design and i can only hope that there is room for it in our growth. 1576918777_2a18cd8616.jpg

probably the most modern structure on our island, by ARi.

chuck is the suck

a new genre in honor of this movie needs to be made and it should be called "dumbed-down comedy". but it's not even comedy. so it should be "dumbed-down so-called comedy". it's classified as a romantic comedy but it really tries to deliver the type of combined shock and humor that the movie american pie made success of. i laughed til i cried when i saw that movie. i think i could have cried after seeing this movie - from wasting my time and money.

predictable slap stick humor, unnecessary raunchiness, and a weak storyline made me feel like i wasted my money and mind you, a ticket to a movie here is only $7.5 (thankfully)

dane cook plays chuck, who was hexed as a child, and has recently taken advantage of his curse serving as a good luck charm to women - once they sleep with him, they are fated to meet their marrying mate. until he stumbles on clumsy cam - jessica alba's character, the plot unfolds as he tries to reverse his hex and prevent cam from escaping him.

while both jessica and dane give acceptable performances and the plot appears to be sound enough for entertainment - the comedy gets lost for me. i didn't laugh out loud once. chuck's sidekick attempted to provide comic relief but just didn't deliver.
the plot was half-assed, to put it nicely. "guy meets girl who happens to be clumsy" is how my friend put it.

some tidbits:
the defining moment for chuck to finally hookup with cam, sans his curse (or so he thinks)- the revelation is that he just happened to be lying and now chuck is still doomed. this was not convincing and not funny and not to mention, weak.
-dane cook sleeping with his obese secretary was out of character but was just done for shock factor. this was not funny.
-penguins eating their own feces. that's all i got to say.
-the pothead brother is so overdone and so cliche and is not funny.
-masturbating inside fresh fruit was done in the 80's in the revenge of the nerds and is not funny.
-dane cook is not hot and not funny.

many reviewers were turned off by the R-rated scenes and although i am always one who can appreciate perversions and am tolerable of nudity, i found that the way they used it was unnecessary and forced. i appreciated looking at jessica in her penguin undies more than i did anything else in this film. she was not made for slapstick.

american pie, old school, the sweetest thing, and there's something about mary all fall into the must-see category of this genre.... the kind that made you laugh out loud at semen in your hair among other things. this is not a must-see but a must-pass.

real muthaphuckn sushi

i love sushi. it took awhile for me to find a go-to sushi restaurant on this island. i went to rotary sushi for the first time and i was ultimately satisfied but it left me with nothing more to be desired. i finally went beyond satisfied at ebisu sushi in tumon. their rolls are top grade...rolled neatly and presented beautifully without being too big to eat or falling apart. they also have some creative chirashi...some with fresh pineapple and mandarin. and finally they have grilled specialties. they take three days to prepare their salmon. the first day consists of soaking in brine, the second day it is smoked, and then the third day - marinated and grilled. i still have yet to find a sushi joint with all the creative skill that my california havens provided but this will certainly fit the bill. pictures to follow.

mimi.jito

it can't be contested....my two favorite drinks, bloody marys and mojitos, are two of the most high maintenance cocktails out there. i will only indulge in either of them if they are made perfectly and lucky for me i've found my outlet on Guam - Fishbowl. It can be considered a permanent fixture on island because when it first opened its doors, it managed to upgrade the bar scene to include reliable ambiance, delectable cocktails, and a hospitable staff. for weeks now, i've deemed it my wednesday happy hour locale where i meet with whomever i can recruit to join me for the best mojitos fathomable. i've been fortunate enough to be in good company and be catered to by its authoritatively distinct bar manager, jun. week after week, i've been treated to a special concoction that has left me with no other choice than to continue to chorale my troops for a wednesday night rendezvous that i've permanently deemed as "mojito wednesdays".
it's no coincidence that my social aptitude has given me recognition at several bars on island - where i am often given high-five gestures, free drinks, reduced bar tabs, prime service, and special concoctions from time to time. i'm a patron that will worship a fine bar and a skilled staff because i am admittingly a humbled frequent flyer.
and now i'm tickled that my mojito of choice has been given permanence in the form of a menu item on a certain promo:

mojito.jpg

just what would classify this mojito as first-class? i must first tell you of when i tried to tend my very own mojitos and miserably failed because decent mint was nowhere to be found. here they hand-pick their own mint from their own nursery and it is brought fresh, abundant, and flavorful for each serving. generous amounts of brown-sugar syrup, club soda, sweet and sour mix, rum, and flavorful accoutrements are skillfully shaken with love to serve up a perfect drink that i can never refuse.

no s** in the chmpagne room

champagne bar, that is.
the champagne bar that was just dust and tile a mere 6 weeks ago first opened for business yesterday. while i was late in contributing to the design and execution of the space, i was able to get in on some of the critical items toward the end. there you have it - my first architectural project on this island. the firm i work with is one to be proud of.

soiree is slated to have its grand opening on aug. 22 but it's already open for business

blockbuster nights

i tell myself that if i watch a movie before going to bed...this will put me to sleep but really all it does is grab my attention that i end up sleeping at 4am. lately i've seen some noteworthy movies....some go as far back as 2005. these are movies that i would not have viewed on my own unless told to.....but then again, i am far as one can be from being a movie buff.
Little Manhattan
A 10-year old boy experiences his first love in his familiar Manhattan territory. He is a skeptic from witnessing the demise of his parents but manages to learn about the realities of love by experiencing it for himself the first time and even from the dysfunctional relationship of his parents.
Prime
First of all it has the adorable guy from October Road...whom I never even knew existed until recently. Secondly, it has Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman working magically together. It's the kind of story without all the cheese and the biggest lesson is that love isn't enough to get you what you want. She is a late-thirties divorcee of a 9-year marriage and has her eyes opened by the youthful love of a man in his early-twenties. Love is deepened when they realize how tangled they've become. It doesn't have that predictable ending where you think you've had too much cheese.
The Holiday
Tales of two women stuck in troublesome relationships exchange lives and find what they've been needing by trying something new and learning about themselves in the process. I first dismissed this as a typical chick flick but it's effect on me really hit the nail on the head.
Because I Said So
Two sisters and a hovering mother have only well intentions for one of their own and in the midst of meddling a bit too much.....unexpectedly find what they've been looking for. This movie isn't perfect because it did have a lot of cheese and predictability and it certainly is a chick flick. Diane Keaton is in her typecast role...but it resonated enough for me to like it.

reigning over

[s o t d]: On Love, In Sadness - Jason Mraz

as.gif

my wishful movie date finally came through and i saw reign over me on the big screen last night. the movie certainly leaves you with a lot to sink your teeth into since it touches on so many aspects of human relationships that are simultaneously tangible, tragic, and funny. depending on your life experiences, this movie can really leave a powerful impression on you. it has got me thinking and has made me put my life experiences in perspective.
the main character is recovering from severe loss and we are taken through this powerful journey as we see his rekindled friendship (with Don Cheadle's character) as the catalyst for carrying him through his pain. alongside, you are exposed to the complexities of traumatic events (death, post-traumatic stress, suicide), the challenges that come with maintaining a happy marriage, the certainty about the career paths we've chosen for ourselves, and the question of which people around you truly look out for your best interests in life. i would never dare equate my misfortunes or hardships to the magnitudes displayed in this film so it made me feel appreciative toward my life and reminded me of the underlying hope that will soon come to fruition. you learn that people heal on their own time at their own will and no amount of intervention will be effective unless it is a mutual undertaking. in every emotional obstacle we face, we are merely just mending our broken hearts.
adding to the appeal of this movie is the cinematography. the new york lights and city soot seemed to be toned down as to set the stage for this film. each scene makes you feel as if you were in place and there is one scene where adam sandler leaves his tears welled up and dripping from his face, that you want to either cry with him or wipe them off yourself. will ferrel did it for Stranger than Fiction and now this is Adam Sandler's breakout role. his character here is not exempt of his usual screechy voice or comedic candor as shows you the tragic world that is of Charlie Fineman.

Flawless Fiction

Stranger than Fiction is by far the most intelligent comedic film that I've had the privilege of viewing. Thought-provoking and inspiring, it draws you in and effortlessly allows you to acknowledge and appreciate every viewing moment. All of the cast, the plot, and the artful directing and writing leave you awestruck. Both Maggie Gylenhall and Will Ferrel pull off highly notable performances. The story is about a lonely man who discovers that his reality is being dictated by a voice he suddenly becomes aware of. This leads him to live his life without hesitation while he goes on a search for his fate. What unravels is something wholeheartedly original that leaves you without regret for viewing this film...so please go and see it! Although I will have to warn you that is a dark comedy that might be considered "tragic" at some points but witnessing Will Ferrel as Harold Crick on the pursuit of whether his own life is a comedy or a tragedy adds to all the wit this movie has to offer.

backin' up JT - Justin Timberlake

Seven of us enjoyed JT's gyrations on Thursday night and despite my post wisdom-tooth-extraction woes, I put my heels on to cheer Sexyback on. Even he couldn't please all crowds as I was told of his published negative reviews. What's a girl to do but back him up? I had to put my two-cents in and tell the world that while all opinions are entitled, I do beg to differ (I'm commenter no. 9). Ooh and I bought the coolest shirt to prove my love. He's just irresistable. On an even better note, I am definitely on par with SF Chronicle's review.
And just in case you're not sick of my current fixation...a great story to add would be that exbf's sister, a pastry chef at the 4 Seasons, got to make a Banana Split for JT himself. She reported he ordered Beef Tenderloin with a side of Heinz 57, a Banana Split, and Sprite for room service. Lucky girl got his autograph from his tab. She's made the closest JT encounter in my network.

Youtube Idol - Mia Rose on YouTube

A dry socket where my thrid molar used to be is no fun but its afforded me some time at home to do some senseless web browsing and I've stumbled on this beautiful singer.....who's won much popularity on YouTube. Check It Out. She's got a whole slew of youtube entertainment and she's quite good.

If you want to be understood...Listen - Babel Review

Our simple Saturday afternoon took quite a turn after viewing this film. Having only heard about it, I had no expectations and haven't even seen the trailers. Some might even gasp at the fact that Brad Pitt was not the single reason I decided to drag exbf, Hazel, and Jesy to watch Babel at the Loew's Fourplex in Santa Monica.

4D Earth - Microsoft's Virtual Earth

Google Earth broke the ice with the amazing satelite views and now Microsoft is vying for the forefront with Virtual Earth....with actual detail of buildings that lets you tilt the view and see a virtual "fourth" dimension. So of course my guage of how bad-ass it is....search "GUAM". While the mapping is certainly more descriptive that Google's....we have not made it to the fourth dimension. The interface is not as smooth as Google's so as one would expect from Microsoft, this premature release is still buggy. I still prefer Google's mapping because the images are at much higher resolution for less populated areas. Flying over San Francisco was crystal clear and quite impressive. The con for me is the fact that the interface is integrated into Internet Explorer makes it seem less effective. Also note the little red pixels on the San Francisco image...these are EVIL ads!!....pop-ups! Definte losing factor here. Try it out!

two reviews - the Breakup and the Prestige Reviews

feed your brain - BIll Clinton

over sunday afternoon coffee (made my exbf), he brought to my attention Clinton's controversial interview on Fox which prompted a storm of heated discussion....and i can clearly see why. if you haven't already, its worth a good long look (about 30 minutes) on youtube. i lingered on youtube well after to see some of the media reaction and my heart got all racy. i don't posess enough political intellect to make a strong argument, but my emotions ran strong as i watched. give it a try if you are even remotely concerned.

summer reviews

the 4400
last month, exbf and I stumbled on the series trailer for the 4400 - a sci-fi series airing on the USA network about 4400 people who reappear from the past- some with unexplained powers such as telekinetics and telepathy - and have been presumed missing or dead. there is government intervention, consistent dramatic plots, fine acting, and loads of sci-fi to back it up. little did i know that this series is already in its third season. And how lovely is it that exbf has not only purchased the first two seasons, but has a new flat panel HDTV hooked up to his Bose surround sound (as for the manly specs of this setup - i haven't got a clue). we (but mostly just HE) were glued to this show all weekend. that's the thing with series dvds...you just can't stop until you reach the end. its so evil but so satisfying for someone like me who is not all so fond of delayed gratification.

4400.jpg

Superman
i'm such a girly girl who can care less about this surge of superhero flicks out there and yes, i dare say - even Spiderman! (but i think that's mostly because i'm not fond of Kirsten Dunst - petty (and proud of it) i know!). so here comes that man of steel and maybe its partly because he is super in all respects but this rendition of the superhero was really successful for me. first of all, i appreciate the fact that it wasn't all about the grand effects and the big stunts. the story actually has depth AND warmth: it picks up where we last see him in the big screen and he realizes that he is the last remaining from his home. he returns to earth the find motivation and purpose for his existence only to be bogged down by the apparent loss of his love, Lois Lane and the return of his power-hungry enemy, Lex Luthor. the acting is actually enough to be engaging - Kate Bosworth is out of her teeny-bopper usual; Kevin Spacey with his spellbinding, psychotic skills; and the pleasantly surprising Brandon Routh who does Christopher Reeves proud and tickles my fancy. my only (not)"complaint" is that Kumar was making me laugh with his eyes. hazel and i were waiting for him to make a dumb remark but found it even funnier that he had no lines.

Santana strikes again - Romantic
Yes this is a shoe but ain't it beautiful!? I am crossing my fingers that the online shoe store will still have this in stock when i get paid on Friday. thank God almighty, it's payday!! Back to the shoe - i admit i'm not always a fan of Santana's shoe creations but once in awhile he'll really hit me hard. it's hard to find an ivory shoe that doesn't scream wedding. this shoe can be taken out on the town with jeans or be brought to work in a suit. the peep toe, the fine detailing on the buckle, and the pattern on the fabric make it so superbly lusty yet Romantic, as it is named appropriately. lawdy lawd.

the family stone

i was looking forward to this movie because i expected it to be some great ephiphany of a movie to watch and of course i was curious and excited to witness SJP perform outside of my beloved SATC. i did see Failure to Launch and although that was a predictable date movie on many levels...i enjoyed the film fondly and was entertained by her "non-Carrie" character. but that's another review.

my FAVORITE thing about the new job is lunch! not only is lunch provided but lunch means time for tea and time for loehmann's. i have raved about fantasia being the best pearl tea in the world but tea au lait in San Ramon is really growing on me. it is in the most unexpected non-distinct suburban strip mall (next to a pet store!) and serves up quality tea with consistency and service that surpasses even my beloved fantasia (insert gasp here). the owner is always around to ensure the finest and there are no clueless teeny boppers giving you haphazard service....and even better they all speak AND understand english. just like fantasia they only use real tea leaves, fruit, and cream as opposed to powdery flavoring. they also have a broader menu and serve crepes (which i have yet to try) in addition to pastries and tea (and coffee). my daily routine is often buying the royal tea au lait with boba and then walking to loehmann's to browse through the bargains....no purchasing, just looking. my new rule is never pay full price and only buy if its on clearance or if its a rare item. the great thing about tea au lait is also that they don't flinch when you order off menu. they are more than happy to mix it up. i will have to admit that fantasia's pearls are a tad sweeter but i haven't had an instance of not-so-fresh pearls at this joint. they are always the perfect consistency and given in just the right amount. i sure do love the squishy balls in my mouth. lol *snicker

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII SCREAM

I must SCREAM that I've found the ice cream flavor that i've been scouring for at the frozen section for MANY years now!! I first saw it when i went to the East Coast...Dreyer's makes "Ice Cream Sandwich Ice Cream"!! Who doesn't love ice cream sandwiches? Last night at Albertson's I found the lone tub of Ice Cream Sandwich Ice Cream and could hardly wait to crack the carton open and pleasure myself. You must search for it and then immediately become delighted "once it hits your lips" LOL. It's like cookies and cream....but the chocolate wafers which are chewy and richer than the usual cookies are so yumMMmmmmmmmmmmy. Could I make a harder plea for this ice cream?

fade to black

Jay Z's Fade to Black aired on Showtime last week and watching it puts me in even greater awe of him and his music. I accidentally caught him on concert when he toured with 50 cent and I was accompanying my teeny-bopper cousin. He was there for Fitty and I bought him a ticket as a treat. It was the best concert I've been to....everyone was screaming their heads off rapping his lyrics and dancing. He is so classy, so not-ghetto, so talented, so humble. Too bad he won't be touring anymore. I have all his albums in my Video IPOD, complete with Album Art.

my new indulgence

Because of my Fantasia Tea fanaticism....its rare that I will indulge in something new. I did, however, find a very stimulating combination of flavors at Coldstone Creamery yesterday and it will be my new(found) indulgence.....Coffee Icecream and Cheesecake Icecream mixed with Bananas. It was yummmmy. I have other indulgences that I will not stray from:
Warm Chocolate Souffle at Pasta Pomodoro
Watermelon and Coconut Icee at the Desserts Zone
Fresh-baked Chocolate Chip Cookie from Hennesey's in San Francisco
Lychee MIlk Tea or Honey Green Milk Tea with Pearls from Fantasia
Creme Brulee Tart from Segifredo's at the San Francisco Shopping Center

searching my soul in furniture

One absolutely undoubtable feeling with buying a new house is that it feels new because it IS new. The fresh palette beckons for inspiration and it also means you don't have to worry about disagreeable paint or tile from the previous owner. There are no finish upgrades to be done or woes about inadequate storage or old odors.
There is absolutely no rush in creating my perfect space and I am taking this rather seriously as I find all the unique and most importantly, CHEAP finds. My first item of business was to find the rug to inspire my color scheme/theme and so I did. I also found a very practical and stylish bed.

The blue rug goes in my bedroom to match my storage bed, which has black leather panelling. The brown rug will go in my bathroom. My bathroom will have magenta walls with chocolate trim. I'm so excited!

look at me, i'm cute and will relax you

Another virtually uselss trinket from the world of Hazel which i've recently grown a liking to are these Hidamari No Tami figures...which sway their heads from side to side when the sun hits its built-in solar panel. Absolutely cute and it comes in many varieties. The one I want is this "Whispering Forest" version which shows the happy figure with a buddy on its belly swaying their heads to the sky while nature sounds pipe away.

my precious micro

I just looove my new GBA micro. not only is it pretty but it is sooOOoo cute! my list of girly games is almost complete...so far, I've got

Mr. Driller 2
Super Bust a Move
Bubble Bobble
Space Channel 5 (Dreamcast's version of Bust a groove)
Ms. Pacman Maze Madness
Warioware Twisted (not exactly girly, but FUN)

I am thinking of adding Tetris Delux, Puyo Pop Fever, and Pocket Dogs. And just to be ridiculously superfluous and cutesy, maybe Hello Kitty Party Pals (not that I like Hello Kitty)

The BEST site to buy all your GBA stuff is from the Portable Game Store They have EVERY title under the sun for CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP...and a lot of cool imported portable gaming gear. I also go to IGN and CNET to look at user reviews, ratings, and screenshots.

I must also mention that thanks to Hazel, our family has been enthralled by the world of Katamari Damacy with our recent purchase (err Joie's) of We Love Katamari. You must view the website just to see how colorful the Katamari world is. You roll and roll and roll and its nothing but fun. I wish they would make this for the GBA one day but it seems it will remain exclusive to the Playstation genre and only go so far as the PSP (as speculated).
NOW who can't say I'm a gamer! *snicker

Too Good Secret

It happens every year and it's almost too good to share...the San Francisco Dine About Town starts on January 1 and its time for us to book those lunch and dinner dates and eat eat eat...for cheap! Nothing bad about prefixe menus at low prices....so check it out and lets get together!!
I've got my eye on Roy's, Asia de Cuba, Andalu, and Frisson.

i hate small talk

exbf and I had a fairly in-depth conversation about small talk and it's bugged me even more after talkiing about it. I hate small talk. While I know its supposed to be a useful and neccesary tool for breaking the ice and jumpstarting conversation between unfamiliar folk....I really don't care and would rather just remain quiet. Today at work people were asking "how was your weekend"...and all i could think was, "do you really care? " Not to disregard their sincerity but I'm one who would rather just skip the small talk. I don't like engaging in frivolous conversation with my stylist at the salon, with the cab driver, the stranger next to me on the bus....and don't have a care about their plans, their wives/husbands, or what they do. This is sounding rather selfish and antisocial but my sentiments are just that small talk is fake and being fake makes me uncomfortable.

my scarf fetish

It all started when Rachelle flashed her adorable scarf weeks ago and since then I've been searching for the same loop-knit scarf. I even dragged Joie, Jules, and Jeff with me to Macy's in San Francisco to make my unsucessful scarf pilgrimage. It seems only ebay could satiate my search and this is also where my newfound ebay activity came from as well...its all from the scarf!! Anyway amidst the search, I realized there were other fetish-worthy scarves that I coveted. Last night on a liesurely yet stressful (is that even possible?!) visit to the mall with Kylan, I saw the scarves on display at Lane Bryant's storefront. I never go into this store because well, nothing against FFF's (full-figured fatties), the clothes only come in sizes 14-28 - this I learned on their website tagline. Anyway back to my previously-coveted scarves, which are now in my possession. I also found another one at walmart, of all places...inspite of my horrific trip, my scarf search came to an end. I'm through looking (and buying!)

give thanks & calories

For this Thanksgiving, I will be taking on the task of making a selection of desserts for our 30 friends or so. Last year was much more involved since it was our household that had volunteered to host the feast.
Colder temperatures are upon us and warm desserts will be on the bulk of my menu. I will be making a Peachberry Oatmeal Crisp in which berries and peaches will be buried beneath a layer of an encrusted melting oatmeal cookie. This is always a hit and is even more enjoyable with vanilla ice cream. I am trying to bring my other selections close to home by doing some meaningful "twists" to the traditional recipes. My latiya will be two layers of cake (infused with a hint of coconut essence) with a seasonal fruit (yet to be determined)in between. My bread pudding will have coconut milk and topped off with a caramel sauce and crisped coconut flakes. Finally my 2 final choices will remain truer to its form and that is Ginataan, a traditional filipino dessert "soup" consisting of tropical fruits, yams, and sweet flour simmered in coconut milk. And instead of old fashioned Apple pie, I will opt for a lighter Apple tart. For ginataan, I like to throw in the small tapioca pearls to add texture and I dissolve the sweet yams in a separate stock of cooconut milk to not only add color but act as a natural sweetener. The apple tart will actually be served cold and inspired by exbf's aunt, made with variation. I will smear the apples with lemon curd and top it off with a layer of cream cheese and sour cream mixed together.
I think I am making myeslf hungry thinking about these deserts and I am also getting tired thinking of the cooking I'll have to do. If there is time, I might also make an Esspresso Flan to add to the cold dessert selection.

I never talk politics

Well...not never but rarely will I indulge...
I've tuned in to early election results of major (as in pivotal and extremely indicative) measures that have passed across the country and I must say, San Francisco is such a boldy progressive district. The constiuents of San Francisco have passed measures to ban gun ownership in homes, except by those required to own a firearem for their occupation. Everyone will have to surrender their firearms by April. Also, they passed a measure to deter military recruiters from High School campuses. On the flip side, Texas has passed a measure in which so far, 78% of voters BANNED gay marriages. I am proud to be in California...and even more proud to be in the Bay Area. Here we ban guns, not gays. Although San Francisco can be wound up in its radical yuppy voter demographic, it is a city that steps out in the political arena.
It felt good voting and I can't help but hark back to my high school government teacher, Mrs. Umagat, who instilled in me our single most important civic duty. Watching election results is like watching sports...it get's so exciting when it's so close!

Jarhead Gyllenhal

This movie is not about war, but about being a soldier. I appreciate it moreso because it has no agenda on how you should feel about war, the government, or Iraq...but simply makes you empathize with the soldier. His experience in the desert, although lengthy, never gave him the fulfilment of engaging in active combat. During this, we see his internal struggles with his role as a Marine, his relationship with his girlfriend and his family, and his friendships with his comrades....all whilst removed from War as we perceive it, and in isolation from the world while forming bonds with his platoon.
What is most appealing is Jake Gyllenhal's performance and how it is complemented by Jaimie Foxx's and Peter Sarsgaard's roles. Peter Sarsgaard plays Troy, his partner in combat, whose line in the movie summarizes the sentiment of this film..."Fuck Politics, We're all Here. The rest is bullshit". This is what you have to learn from the movie.

HIMYM

How I Met Your Mother is a funny show. Not since Friends, Frasier, Seinfeld, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond (these shows are all dated or have been around for a looong time ( except for King of Queens-it's still current!) have I been able to truly laugh at a sitcom. It's also truly relatable.

An example:
Ted, the main character tells a girl he wants to date that she is ineffable and she says to him "i'm not f***able?"

Funny. I am SOooo effable!! Try this show!
Arrested Development is back this week, too....for an hour long at 8pm on Monday. I love this show (hehehe still laughing at BOB LOBLAW) but its always on-again, off-again. I get irked by sporatic scheduling.

cupcakery

I finally located a cupcakery in the bay area and convinced Joie to make the pilgirmage with me to Love At First Bite (cutest name ever!) in Berkeley and we bought a dozen cupcakes to sample from.

purefirsttruelemon368.jpg

Everything was delicious, including the Love Thy Neighbor cookie that Joie had an instant sample of. There was just so much to choose from...inclluding bread pudding, cake bites, assorted cookies, and rugelach (which I'm not too sure what it is). We opted to try the Red Hot Love, which is Red Velvet with Cream cheese frosting, First Love which is vanilla with chocolate buttercream, Lemon Kiss which is Lemon cake with lemon buttercream, the Hummbingbird, Bunny Love, and Razzle Dazzle. Refer to the menu :)

By accessory, I mean something you could really use. I've been intrigued by remixes and this might seem a bit overkill but I can't imagine how much fun it would be to have this at a party. But then again I could just buy mixing software.

napoleon overdue

Finally I've seen Napoleon Dynamite in its entirety and I had to wait a while to fully digest what I just viewed until I realized there was nothing deep at all. And for that very reason...I have somehow found appreciation for the humor and simplicity of the film. The name, "Napoleon Dynamite" exemplefies just what to expect...an oxymoron of comedic sorts. I always look for the movies that make my tears fall or my gut hurt but this one was just plain funny. It makes you think of geeks, high school...or just being an outsider. It reminds me of when and how I can laugh at my not-so-proud moments. That's really the only way to get over something...is to be able to laugh about it. Everything from being bullied to being arrested to being left on the wayside....there's humour in everything and even boring geeky people who live in cowtown are funny (probably a lot funnier than yuppies who live in the city). Yuppies are boring. I see them at Happy Hour and I think they firmly believe they are worthy of attention. But I never knew where the name comes from....it stands for Young Urban Professional. Wow had no clue.

so fresh and so clean

I recommend products often and i'll admit this is the most "off-topic" recommendation.... a tongue scraper:) The first time I used a tongue scraper...i was so excited to make use of my tongue!! I guarantee you that your mouth won't feel as fresh without one. Years ago, my dentist handed one to me and since then, I've been looking for that same product on the market and just tonight, I've found it at Walgreens!! You must go and get the BreathRx products and you'll wanna make out with someone soon after.

Weeks ago I posted about the adorable iguy...and I even bought one for exbf. Now Speck Products introduces iKitty and as the name suggests, its a kitty cat. I am not into cats (or pets, LOL) so I think this is strange. Some people are fond of em but eck!

News etc

I was listening to radio news today and some "hmmmph" news to reiterate:
Union City just recently installed highly-sensitive photo-enforced cameras for red light violators and today they announced they will be taking back 3,000 citations because of a timing error on the yellow light. So thats $351/citation! I say that's weak. LOL. I see people blatantly run the reds and am more than amused to see the camera flash like lightning afterwards. it's been corrected now so watch out!

redflex.jpg

All this hurricane talk has influenced talk of a major earthquake to hit san francisco soon. The media is making it to be an immediate threat and while I do agree that we are in hostile fault zone that's worthy of worry, catalyzing the paranoia is a tad unnecessary. They insist we put non-perishable goods in our cars and warn of thousands of deaths. On a positive note, San Francisco is ahead of the game with all the seismic retrofitting and the strictest building codes in the nation. Now I can only hope that the southern coast would beef up their buildings to withstand hurricane winds. Guam seems to have learned from the wrath of those have passed. Maybe its our love for spam that just keeps us going when the power is out.

There was a nation-wide effort to protest the war this past weekend, and San Francisco was not exempt. Anyway, there have been pro-war rallies with just marginal support but headlining "support your troops". Its disturbing if it can be assumed you don't support the soldiers if you are against the war. I am against the and war I would really like them to go home, and therefore I support their lives.

There goes my $0.02.

CRASH

One of the recommended sites on my main page is from my friend, mochablue A few weeks ago she sparked my interest in the movie Crash. It's one of those movies which I wanted to see at the theater but never got the chance to see. Anyway, I gladly took the recommendation and have been so busy that I only watched it last night. I have many words to say about this movie for so many reasons.

First of all, it's very original and the cast is surprisingly successful. Don Cheadle never fails but to have Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Ludacris (serves comic relief in this film), Ryan Philippe, and Brendan Fraser in the same movie and not be distracted by the lack of acting coherence that one might predict , is even better. The originality stems from an entangled plot of seemingly unrelated characters. The stories for each set of "mini-plots" is not simple, either, as you have the chance to become engaged with them while they reach resolution amidst several unexpected and suspenseful series of events. An added layer to the movie would be all the dialogue revolving around racism. The script plays on all the steroetypes that we've probably already been programmed with or have heard of or faced before in similar contexts, but teaches you a lesson by unravelling the reality in a unique way. Don't worry - it's not a movie that's hard to digest or has to be picked apart. Think Love Actually but it ain't love this time. (spoilers follow)

BEST in the WORLD!

I was browsing online news today and found, this article, a rundown of Boba in the Bay. This article aptly includes a Boba encyclopedia and directory.

boba.jpg

I'm so proud to see MY FANTASIA! at the top of the list. Jules and I would joke about their banner boasting "VOTED BEST PEARL TEA IN SILICON VALLEY" and how it needs to be changed to "BEST PEARL TEA IN THE WORLD!!". Well let me tell you, I've searched far and wide, and sampled Boba & Boba tea in every city I've visited...including Honolulu, LA, San Diego, Guam, Manila, New York, and Minneapolis!! There is no beating fantasia. I get it 3-4x/week and nothing compares to it! Their pearls (sounds better than using "balls"...in conversation, I call em 'balls" and people get thrown off LOL) are excellent...always soft, sweet, and NOT filmy or mushy. They also stay softer longer in cold drinks. Most pearls get HARD in icy drinks but Fantasia has some genius balls, err pearls. They also don't use powder or syrup...and use pureed or fresh fruit and juices. You never get that powdery, gritty consistency. Speaking of consistency...they pre-mix all their milk tea, so you have right proportion of taste each time! When they finally opened in Fremont in March, it saved me a drive to Milpitas. Order either the Lychee Milk tea (tastes good with coocunut jellies mixed with pearls) or the Mango Milk tea...EVERYTHING is GOOD. One day I'll own my own Fantasia :) If I move somewhere far and away from Fantasia, I'll have to bring it with me. My own little "fantasia" island.

Another suprisingly great purveyor of drinks that I've stumbled on recently is "Robeks". There is one in Fremont and it's actually a chain store. They are WWAAAAY better than Jamba Juice. They have exotic juices like pomegranite, papaya, Acai, and mango. Their smoothies just feel/taste more natural and fresh..not as icy and watered down as Jamba. You must try it, toO!

recently i've stumbled on http://www.turntablelab.com, its a great site with not just awesome compilations of music, but all sorts of urban gear. i don't own a turntable or know anything about being a dj....but the site lets you listen to lengthy clips of music....and they are all really good! you'll find that the newer and more popular stuff is on vinyl, but its still worth a listen. anyway they had this really cute shirt:

white person gyrating

in the spirit of conquering some new nightlife last night, the Element Lounge turned out to be a positive experience. The decor, light and air quality, staff were not to be complained about. Perhaps if we went on a better night, it would've been the most enjoyable night. House music was made for people who can't dance. They just jump around endlessly. It probably helped that the crowd demographic was 90% white people. You see some moves you've never seen before that are completely out of sync with the music and it was genuinely entertaining to stand on the sidelines with cocktail in hand and white person gyrating in sight. I would defnitely consider it as a future venue.

April 5, 2005

about closer

I seriously thought the only reason people would see Closer was to get more than a glimpse of Natalie Portman's stripper scene. But even days after viewing it, I have thought about over and over again. It was very thought-provoking...a simple way to portray the complexity of a relationship. Jude Law and Julia Roberts are an unlikely pair but the movie is really held together by natalie's breakthrough performance.

momentary lapse

i think my illness seeped into my brain. i went to see be cool last night and had no clue what the hell the movie was going to be about since i never even saw get shorty or paid attention to the previews. had no clue that was Andre 3000 and The Rock. I really thought he was some samoan guy who looks like the rock. my favorite part was the ass-spankin'!!

February 12, 2005

gwyneth

i never liked her for obvious reasons. or i used to like her until unnamed circumstances occurred (same reason I stopped liking No Doubt). Anyhoo Shakespeare in Love has redeemed my affinity for Mizz Paltrow. It's showing on Bravo, for V-day I presume, and its a really romantic film!! William Shakespeare had a muse to inspire his famed play...how beautiful to discover the would-be reasons behind his intricately-plotted legacy. After this TIVO viewing, off to Best Buy I will go to purchase the DVD in order to whip it out for a romance-inducing flick. But then again, I'm not the biggest fan of "forbidden love". I'm such a doofus for never watching this movie.
My other love-filled films are Serendipity, Amelie, and Love Actually. I know they seem so modern...I'll probably have to search my archives to find one that is less temporal. On a side note, I actually made a pilgrimage to Serendipity (the restaurant) when I was in New York earlier this week.

mimi's hollywood blurbs

There's too much law...jude, that is. 3 movies in one month? i don't know but i'm not convinced.

Seinfeld's 1st three seasons finally get released on dvd. i'm not a die-hard felder but that did take forever!...especially when they have useless shows making their very own special releases. I still must own the 1st season of Arrested Development on DVD.

The AMAZING RACE 6 starts on tuesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I will have life again. I vow to all 2 of my readers that I'll be at TARCON to meet the racers, Phil Keoghan, and to watch the season finale. Anyone down for New York in February!!?????

I must say, Kate Winslet is a dashing woman! She's been getting attention lately for Finding Neverland, her movie with co-hottie, Johnny Depp.

I STILL haven't seen Eternal Sunshine or Saved, some noteworthy films I hear.

Bill Maher or John Stewart, whom do you prefer to watch? John makes me chuckle more but Bill makes me think.
