found art

in my previous entry, i searched for photos of the skate park in dededo but instead found a flickr page that is blog-worthy. this person documented graffiti art throughout the island for other people to reveal the artist. so far, there hasn't been any responses but i'm just amazed that i never noticed these urban touches around the island.

graffiti.jpg
borrowed from boredinsanity's flickr.

alas, demystifying the artist is what makes graffiti so controversial. qualifying it as art is controversial. it is a poignant depiction of personal freedom and expression against the government by way of public property.

discovery

this week commemorates Magellan's landing on Guam. i was reminded of it when i took drive this past weekend to umatac and noticed that there was a little bit more activity that usual. sadly, it seemed rather lackluster. it prompted me to unarchive what little bit of guam history knowledge i was able to retain from the one class i had in high school and went completely blank...other than that magellan landed on these shores, only to be looted by locals and chased away to his fateful death in the Philippines...land of my ancestry.

i've been in a historian type of mood all week...cracking open dusty photo albums and swooning over middle school yearbooks....mostly to gain an understanding of how the hell i got here. there is an exhibit that has been quite the buzz lately and it was a good read in the latest issue of GU magazine - A Journey Home - Camp Roxas and Filiipino American History on Guam. i was intrigued about the story of the mass migration of my predecessors and further discovered that my grandfather was amongst the company of the first filipinos on island. he was not one of those dispersed from the camps but was actually a laborer at what is now andersen air force base. anyway, there is a series of photos which i found quite moving and have now added the preservation of this found history to my list of things to do. here are a few below.

pa.jpg

circa 1949

pa2.jpg

the original is actually as blurry as shown but what was even better was the note he wrote on the back addressed to my grandmother and her children in tagalog....and it translates to "this is the reality of my labor. all i ask is that you study hard".

as you can see, my papa aged quite a bit while working here and he didn't leave until the rest of his family landed the opportunities he strived for. it weren't for post-war america, i would not be here at all. that's a very poignant reflection. the clearest memories i have of my papa are of him debilitated by stroke and confined to a wheelchair. i was about 9 when he died, almost two decades ago.

i have yet to see the exhibit, which ends soon. the website link above leads you to a 10-minute film that gives you a glimpse of the provocative material being exhibited at the guam humanities council.

the real deal

i've recently become heavily involved with the upcoming local production of RENT. this is the first and only time that FULL rights of the show have been given off-Broadway. minor and amateur theater productions have been granted partial rights to RENT but now the local AIDS awareness organizations (Guahan Project and Conscious living) have bestowed us with this rare occasion. i am involved with everything architectural and event-related. it's been great working with the phenomenal talent and being involved with such a huge undertaking. the show will run january 27-30 and tickets can be found at bestseller outlets.

sick leave benefits in San Francisco

This is the first-ever law of such that San Francisco has just passed and it affects me because my employers are headquartered in San Francisco. San Francisco...taking that progressive leap once again. Sweet deal.

This new law takes effect within San Francisco on Monday, February 5. It requires employers to provide PAID sick leave to all their employees.

Starts February 5 for current employees.
1 hour paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked.
Capped at 72 hours of unused leave; 40 hours for small business.
Unused paid sick leave carries over year to year, subject to the cap.
No payment for unused sick leave at termination of employment.

that means no more "use it or lose it" sick leave and 3 more days than my employer prevously offered.

ted's really an architect

My acclaimed sit-com fave, How I Met Your Mother, has recently aired some episodes giving insight on Ted's (the main character) life as an architect. i wondered if he was "really" an architect until it was made clear in tonight's episode when his boss corrected his lack of an architectural license prevents him from qualifying himself as an architect. Ted's really like most practicing "architects" out there....project-managering and job-captaining their way to the top for recognition.

wikipeida is becoming quite the brow-raiser...in the Guam entry, under the entertainment tidbits i quote:

In the animated series The Critic, Duke Phillips becomes confused over the proper designation for the citizens of Guam and conjectures "Guameranians" and "Guami Bears" during his presidential bid.

Guami Bears are now at the top of my list....but right under Guammie of course.

see maps below!!!!

last year i was googoo for google earth when i first downloaded it. earlier today blogger extroardinaire josie pointed out that her house on guam is found on google earth and this is significant because a little over a year ago...guam was a mere blur in their database. although our house on guam is still a blur because well...the clouds are covering it. it seems if you make it to google earth....or even just google...existence can indeed be validated. even the roads on our new house in mountain house are now there but our house was yet to be built when these photos were taken....hey we're dirt but we're dirt on google!

on a much more not-light note....we received notification by mail that a registered sex offender lives on our street. along with others in the area. while i am glad that we have been privileged with this information...it is no-doubt an unsettling thought. california passed megan's law...which allows residents to access a database that locates sex offenders anywhere in the state and publishes their aliases, addresses, and offenses. the star represents our house in fremont and the blue boxes are the registered offenders....goosebumpy!

cunt closeup and gay gangbang

amidst thousands of junk entitled like so...i've found an abundance of comments that were never published! and here i was thinking that my life is not as entertaining as i thought that no-one would care to comment. i'm not a comment whore but seeing that people actually read these lines makes a long day and sleepless night a whole lot easier. so to hazel, kuochen, sal, trench, josie, sean....and whomever left little remarks of acknowledgment on my site these past few months....Thanks and sorry for my retardation. my filters were set on hypersensitve and its a wonder that no one's comments were getting published - not even my own! my absentminded-ness does border blonde-ness when my brain is less than functional.

The worlds wealthiest people....good heavens Bill Gates is still at the top and there are FIVE Walton's! Damn that Walmart. I also learned that the newest billionaire is that Dyson guy...the one who invented those magical bagless/filter-less vacuum cleaners and is in his own tv commercials. I can see he didn't spend much on his marketing but apparently sold a lifetime worth of vacuum cleaners. Sadly, my Martha is out of the billionaire's circle, too. PF - saving Mimi

Personal Finances! have always been an icky topic but these days I can't ignore my financial situation when I am dreaming big with near-empty pockets. Deep down inside I feel bad for not having a substantial savings account for my child - those attempts have failed! Well at least he's got about $200 in his piggy bank. Tax time always reaps a refund and this year it is ever more imperative I hold onto it with mortgage in sight, rent, moving, travelling on top of everything else. I've come across Prosper, a San Francisco-based (and proud of that!!) start-up operating on the concept of lending to friends with interest. As the referenced article states, it's "ebay, friendster, and the bank all rolled into one". I quickly signed up but am still observing before being quick to sign up for a loan. I have some repairing on my own to do. Last year I closed 4 credit accounts and got out of consumer credit couseling. The bad news is that all the credit cards I had increased their lines and I am practically maxed. The good news I got compensation from a car accident, a christmas bonus, a salary increase, and a hefty tax refund to jumpstart me. Even lending on Prosper seems worthy of attention....because if you let one person borrow just $100 @ 6% interest...that's more return than I would get in even the highest of savings accounts. And that leads me to the second part of this plan...open an ING account. This is exactly where my Tax Refund will be going to....but all in anticpation of big expenses to come. ING puts $20 in your account if you are referred....free money is always good! The MOST IMPORTANT thing to do is to clear debt before building reserves. So I have to work on the first part before actually starting to save. For now I'll call it saving MYSELF!.....

You may or may not have noticed the added link to on the "Recommended" area of my sidebar links...I've come across a Personal Finance Blog that has been useful and inspirational these past few weeks. I have reduced my daily lunch budget to $3/day, opened an ING account, lowered the balances of 4 of my credit accounts, and signed up for credit score monitoring in an effort to save myself as i so declare. I've also opened a Prosper account where I have registered as a borrower, lender, and group member...starting a GUAM group. Woohoo I called dibs.

New year's eve partay

Guam has the most affordable New Year's parties I've seen!!
For an extremely small island...that's a TON of options (all affordable, indulgent, and scruptious!). And I always thought the Fireworks displays on island are the grandest I've ever seen...except for maybe Disneyland. The year in America begins in Guam indeed

This year exbf and I will be performing New Year's Kisses via satellite (errr phone lines, if they're not jammed!). exbf will be in New York with WoW folk and I will be in San Diego with Hazel, Kylan, cousins, and possibly Joie, Chris and Joshie. We will return to NYC together when Ryan is settled in (May?) All I hope for are real NYC cupcakes upon Don's return.
I have rented a room at the posh hotel Tower 23 in Pacific Beach and I have ordered a fancy cake to indulge in. I'm excited to party and relax. Today I will go to the venerable Beverages and More to purchase champagne, cider, and moscato. Something for everyone.

Real Quote is not real

I found this quote when I googled Guam...oh the disgust!

There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the countryside and deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the first time. Reason: under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to marry.

(Let's just think for a minute; is there any job anywhere else in the world that even comes close to this?)

per a request (err suggestion)

A friend of mine suggested I publish a wish list on my blog....which I guess, is not the most terrible idea in the world. Problem is...I have the hardest time thinking of what I WANT. There is nothing I am truly coveting other than the previously mentioned....I also already gifted myself this weekend when my search for the perfect white signature coach bag came to an end with the heroic efforts of big sister. exbf did get me that lovely Coach satchel for our anniversary and I've used every single day since. This White purse I've been wanting for awhile but won't get myself to spend all that money and have decided that a smaller, spectacular piece would be more ideal for those special outings.

Hence this: It went on sale for $95 from $179

coach.gif

Anyway back to the list in which I can only think of things I need....and like
The Body Shop Body Butters in Mango or Papaya
Fantasia Tea Prepaid Card (yes really I need this)
Bobbi Brown Soothing Face Tonic
Simple Cordless Phone (our 19.99 refurbished phone from 1999 has recently retired)
Headset for my Cell Phone (I am told I am a road hazard)
Ear Bud replucements for my white Sony Fontopia headphones (they just don't work without those spongy things)

Also had to elaborate that I am not one for name-brand purses to begin with except for a white Coach bag because they are the best made at the most affordable and fashionable combination....and again, back to my affinity for all things white (and fashionable) Furthermore, I can't even sport a little bag for all that long except for brief instances at a time because it would be impossible for me to confine all my accutrements into such a teensy thing for everyday use.

When I was desperately trying to find the cheapest way to get home last summer, I stumbled upon Continental OnePass' shopping affiliates to pleasantly discover that they were actually places I'd shop at. So I officially used this opportunity yesterday when I purchased Don's Christmas present and earned 1,000 miles at CircuitCity.com while doing so. The best right now is Target...you could get a WHOPPING 10 MILES for every dollar spent for the month December. Just my Luck

How unlucky am I that the man to have hit my car while I was stationary not ony doesn't speak english, but has no insurance or driver's license. I retrieved 2 separate estimates for the damage, which amounted to a whooping average of $1500. Mr. Mexico no tenguo dinero and now I am doing a paper chase. I have uninsured motorist coverage on my insurance policy but now I'm dealing with trying to appease the other party and coordinating how my insurance can cover me. It just sucks sorting it out but at least the damage doesn't LOOK like 1500. Anyways, I'll have to wait and see how this dilemma ensues.

misused words

Ryan and I conferred on some misused words and I thought it would be a good idea to get them out there:
-Brang is not a word - should use brought instead as in she brought spam to the pot luck. Kylan says brang all the time! And no I won't bring spam to your party either.
-According to Merrian Webster thunk and rung are indeed valid words for the past participle of think and ring. They just sound odd to me when people use them.
-Conversate is not a word (sorry Biggie!)- you should use Converse, as in to exchange thoughts or words
-Interpretate is not a word either - you should use interpret. I caught my boss using this word the other day but then I retracted my inside thoughts when he corrected himself.
Some other sources online for misused words:
http://wsuonline.weber.edu/wrh/words.htm
http://www.cmu.edu/styleguide/trickywords.html
By the way, the clarification of alumnus (1 man), alumna (1 woman), alumnae (group of women), and alumni (group of men or men and women) was news to me and funny because someone brought it up on the Apprentice or some other reality show recently..

Ever look at the Names Database?
It is exactly what it sounds like...and Hazel's, Joie's, and My name are all under Fabila. Not that this is special....but Fabila is not a common name at all, at least that's what I think.
You can even search by school and they even have all the guam schools! Here is Academy's listing (my alma mater).

deadbeats

For as small of an island Guam is, there sure are a lot of deadbeats. This story published in today's PDN (Pacific Daily News- Guam's primary daily newspaper publication)is somewhat humorous and sad at the same time. I never bothered to file for child support from Kylan's dad because I know he'd be one of these deadbeats. The Government of Guam wouldn't need to tell me that. He never gave a SINGLE penny since Kylan's birth. Perhaps a toy or a meal from Mcdonald's but other than that, he has nothing to show for. To think, $87 Million worth of delinquincies from 8,000 cases - that averages to about $11,000 per case. The population of Guam is about 150,000. That means about 6% of the population are deadbeats. Thats a whole lot of babydaddies and babymommas. Some babymommas have more than 2 babydaddies! I know some. I had to edit this because I had written that all deadbeats were dads...which I don't know for a fact but it sure is a lot fun and a lot more convenient to assume so :)

unfulfilled friday

after work i had drinks with my coworkers at Paragon. Of course because I had to drive home, I had to restrain myself. Tonight I was really hoping to hit the city with some girly girls. But unfortunately the girly girls I know are tired from work and not as motivated to paint the town (is it red?...I'm no good at figures of speech, I don't know why I use em!). If anyone's down for some bonafide urban exploration, by all means, indulge me! Here's my list of places to experience: (Some I've been to before and want to go back, like right now!
Roe, had many recommendations for partying here...I'm sure one day
Jade Bar - I've been here before with the guys and the bathroom is a great conversation piece
Hotel Biron, looks like a good place for a ladies night - where my ladies at?
Bliss, my all-time safe-spot - neighborhood feel and great ambiance
Magnet, great name is enough for me to want to go!
Anyway tomorrow I'm going to EZ5 and there's a lot of stuff going on this month. Its still warm enough to enjoy the nights! And warm is relative.

bitchy books and girly gadgets

women always have a story to tell and this could be dangerous for the reading public. when i go to borders, there are just so many books and i seriously can't discern which one to buy because they all seem to have similar themes.....about being fat, leaving that man, finding THE man, having a baby, bonding with a sister, making out with a girl (LOL), my grandma died.....you get the point. when people recommend things...i don't always get a satisfactory result. i found a site through shoewawa's shoe blogs with an even wittier name called trashionista. they (p)review all those chick novels out there so you won't have to filter through what could be trash...hence the name!

i've also discovered more from this bad-ass blogring - another affiliated site, shiny shiny, features girly gadgets! you know i bought a pink ipod, fell for the purple phone, and now want a white digital camera. as you can see i'm a sucker for girly goods.

News etc

I was listening to radio news today and some "hmmmph" news to reiterate:
Union City just recently installed highly-sensitive photo-enforced cameras for red light violators and today they announced they will be taking back 3,000 citations because of a timing error on the yellow light. So thats $351/citation! I say that's weak. LOL. I see people blatantly run the reds and am more than amused to see the camera flash like lightning afterwards. it's been corrected now so watch out!

All this hurricane talk has influenced talk of a major earthquake to hit san francisco soon. The media is making it to be an immediate threat and while I do agree that we are in hostile fault zone that's worthy of worry, catalyzing the paranoia is a tad unnecessary. They insist we put non-perishable goods in our cars and warn of thousands of deaths. On a positive note, San Francisco is ahead of the game with all the seismic retrofitting and the strictest building codes in the nation. Now I can only hope that the southern coast would beef up their buildings to withstand hurricane winds. Guam seems to have learned from the wrath of those have passed. Maybe its our love for spam that just keeps us going when the power is out.

There was a nation-wide effort to protest the war this past weekend, and San Francisco was not exempt. Anyway, there have been pro-war rallies with just marginal support but headlining "support your troops". Its disturbing if it can be assumed you don't support the soldiers if you are against the war. I am against the and war I would really like them to go home, and therefore I support their lives.

There goes my $0.02.

BEST in the WORLD!

I was browsing online news today and found, this article, a rundown of Boba in the Bay. This article aptly includes a Boba encyclopedia and directory.

boba.jpg

I'm so proud to see MY FANTASIA! at the top of the list. Jules and I would joke about their banner boasting "VOTED BEST PEARL TEA IN SILICON VALLEY" and how it needs to be changed to "BEST PEARL TEA IN THE WORLD!!". Well let me tell you, I've searched far and wide, and sampled Boba & Boba tea in every city I've visited...including Honolulu, LA, San Diego, Guam, Manila, New York, and Minneapolis!! There is no beating fantasia. I get it 3-4x/week and nothing compares to it! Their pearls (sounds better than using "balls"...in conversation, I call em 'balls" and people get thrown off LOL) are excellent...always soft, sweet, and NOT filmy or mushy. They also stay softer longer in cold drinks. Most pearls get HARD in icy drinks but Fantasia has some genius balls, err pearls. They also don't use powder or syrup...and use pureed or fresh fruit and juices. You never get that powdery, gritty consistency. Speaking of consistency...they pre-mix all their milk tea, so you have right proportion of taste each time! When they finally opened in Fremont in March, it saved me a drive to Milpitas. Order either the Lychee Milk tea (tastes good with coocunut jellies mixed with pearls) or the Mango Milk tea...EVERYTHING is GOOD. One day I'll own my own Fantasia :) If I move somewhere far and away from Fantasia, I'll have to bring it with me. My own little "fantasia" island.

Another suprisingly great purveyor of drinks that I've stumbled on recently is "Robeks". There is one in Fremont and it's actually a chain store. They are WWAAAAY better than Jamba Juice. They have exotic juices like pomegranite, papaya, Acai, and mango. Their smoothies just feel/taste more natural and fresh..not as icy and watered down as Jamba. You must try it, toO!

sprint now lets you roam to guam...i just called their roaming services number and they unlocked my phone. that means i can receive calls to my current number. but i will have to pay .50 a minute. its steep but at least the convenience is there. i'm sure i'll end up activating a phone temporarily for local calls! ack life on guam!

double hawt! - march 30-april 1

Good Heavens...Rosario Dawson AND Taye Diggs in one place...and Rosario Dawson is living in San Francisco during the film. She was telling her stories on Leno. I wish I could camp out but its on Sixth Street! Scurry. Here's the article. I'm looking out for Rosario Dawson/Taye Diggs sightings.

more info:
"Rent" due: If the rain doesn't come back, the cast and crew of "Rent" are due to take over 6th and Mission and nearby Jessie Street March 30, 31 and April 1. This dicey part of town will stand in for Manhattan's Lower East Side, circa the early 1980s.

"It will be good for the neighborhood, which already is going through a renaissance," says Angel Cruz, owner of Club Six, which will replicate CBGB's, a famous New York rock club. Cruz said location scouts were impressed by the "urban artwork" on his club's exterior "painted by the best graffiti artists in the city." About 400 extras are expected to swarm around Sixth, which probably will be closed to traffic for part of the filming.

blurb versus blurp

blurb

A blurb is just a short written peice about something. Usually it's in reference to a newspaper article that briefly mentions a barely newsworthy item.

2. blurb

A small, dense amount of descriptive text which can be fired like a projectile.

Shoot me a blurb on that, Tim, and I'll get back to you this afternoon.

1. blurp

to get pulled over by the police. comes from the sound the police sirens make ("BLURP!")

"SLOW DOWN...i ain't tryna get blurped tonight!"

2. Blurp

The sound one makes when belching; usually followed by a "Dude, who just mouth-farted?"

Blurp!
Oh, man, who just burped? I hare it when people burp and then blow in your face! Stupid butt-bandits!

3. Blurp

A pussy fart!

Meisha: dude did Melissa just Blurp?
Stacey: dude i think so, maybe it was you, damn girl you's nasty!

new my ebay

wow my ebay has a new look and i really like it. its so much easier to use and automatically lists your searches in alphabetical order. its gotten a lot prettier too. too bad don isn't at fedex anymore...can't boast "next day fedex" services at low prices. my last ebay listing wasn't successful. i've been monitoring onepass miles but still haven't caught myself a steal for a bargain. $727 for 50,000 miles. i need 60,00 to get to guam and the guy offered 960 for 60,000....almost the same as a guam ticket. i'm forever searching for the best deal to travel home.

Andre 3000 and Big Boi will star in the musical film, which is described as a cross between The Color Purple and Amelie. The duo is also currently working on the film's soundtrack, which will serve as the next OutKast album.

hangover

so it got me thinking...i know some *ahem* friends of mine that will be waking up feeling not too good....i researched some ailments for their troubles. apparently you're supposed to do the following in to brace yourself for a hangover: 1. understand what alcohol does to your body 2. prepare for the night out 3. know what to do while you're drinking 4. survive the morning after 5. conduct a hangover cure regime consisting of staying hydrated, puking all the bad out and recovering your hygiene I also found this strange concoction that will suposedly be a cure-all for your hangover: 1. Take 2 aspirins 2. Take 200mg cysteine (available at specialty food stores) 3. Take 600mg vitamin C 4. Take 1 tablet vitamin B-complex 5. Mix the following ingredients together in a blender: * 1 banana * 1 small can V-8 * 6 large strawberries * 2 tablespoons honey * 1 cup orange juice * 1-2 cups milk (or soy milk), to desired consistency * ¼ tsp. salt * dash of nutmeg 6. Drink it all up. YEAH EASY!...tell me if it worked!

hrmmm cool sites. look its 427am.

krispy kreme = heart attack

today someone brought some "goodies" for the office. as i chomped the doughnut..i wondered....how "good" it was...

"culled from cnn money: A single glazed Krispy Kreme contains 200 calories, 110 of which come from fat (12 grams). Before you finish chewing a second doughnut, you've exceeded the USDA's recommended fat intake for the entire day. If you keep eating, you should know that a box of 12 contains 144 grams of fat, and would likely entail a trip to the hospital"

ACK!!!

feeling like a lush and a geek

i had a great cocktail at d & b tonight...carribean fantasy. it had pineapple juice, orange juice, grenadine, malibu rum, and banana liquer. its 156 am and i'm up because it's super HAWT right now....i'm craving for another one of those carribean fantasy thingys. hence today's title.
so i've been labelled a lush many times before and i think means someone that likes to drink. but i wasn't sure so i looked it up. here are the results:

a lush is that i can hold my booze better than they can
a lush is someone who is an alcoholic but doesn't actually have a drink problem

1 [n] a person who drinks alcohol to excess habitually
2 [adj] produced or growing in extreme abundance; "their riotous blooming"
3 [adj] full of juice; "lush fruits"; "succulent roast beef"; "succulent plants with thick fleshy leaves"
4 [adj] characterized by extravagance and profusion; "a lavish buffet"; "a lucullan feast"

so there you have it...another educational escapade. but something better was discovered in this search for the meaning of lush...some great sites!

googlism http://www.googlishm.com you can search anything...and it makes a quick list for you and i swear...you'll be laughing!
