this week +, mimi's off-island

i am amazed that i saw so many faces and places this week

i started in honolulu for two days and two nights. i inaugurated myself by driving solo on honolulu freeways...which was super easy coming from a seasoned california freeway driver. i was able to spend time with kat and her bf kev, gene, min, tj, rod, robin, kelvin, marci, christie from college....and at different occasions, of course. marci was kind enough to take me for a drive to sandy beach, where we gazed at beautiful half naked surfers bobbing their heads and delicious bodies out of the water. i had two nights out at the ever-popular mai tai's. the marquez boys entertained me with rock band and showed me some tricks no one ever enlightened me with. gene park joined me for a spectacular meal at fromaggio's while he watched me drink fine red. the whole gang was more than generous in joining me for drinks and pupus at mai tai's. it was my first time being in the company of min, who is awesome...and i can't believe we've never hung out before! i failed to confirm my intinerary and realized i inadvertently missed my flight out of honolulu. i was supposed to fly out thursday night and luckily there was ONE seat left for the next flight out on friday. kat was busy preparing for birthday weekend celebration at the bellows.

from honolulu, i fly to the bay area by landing in san jose. here in the bay, i saw edison , jude , jhimelle , rose, uriah, aris, and the beautiful noemi, and jules among many others on my first night out in san francisco...where we showed our support at MUD's cd release performance at slim's.

the next morning, i fly to san diego to make it in time for a wedding....where sal graced me with his presence for 20 minutes and provided me with a ride from the airport to the church. it was reunion of sorts...seeing many faces i haven't seen in awhile..including jan, jeng , joce c, didi, marci ...among many other familiar faces. the wedding was themed springtime in paris and was a flawlessly beautiful event. mishella ibit picked me up from the church to make it time for the reception in la jolla...but not until we hit up loehmann's so i could get my shopping fix. as soon as the wedding rituals were done with and the dance floor started...we greeted the bride goodbye and raced off to orange county to join another group.

an hour later, mishella and i are in costa mesa with irma , philsan , and kris. we dance the night away and continue the festivities at ihop, where i make my youtube debut. it was 4 am and we proceeded to the diamond bar for some rock band that lasted us until 7am. 3 hours later, we wake up and get ready to hit the road...but not before carlo treated us to some great conversation and food at bj's brewery.

it's only sunday afternoon and we end up in LA in the company of my sister hazel and her awesome boyfriend jesy. we gather ourselves to pick up philsan for a birthday escape to laguna beach. i am treated to heaven at a little boutique called heavenly and am thankful for discovering it. 2 rounds of jameson, 6 sake bombs, a llaeger bomb, and 1 washington apple later...we are the most wasted in the streets of laguna beach, with the exception of our designated driver, of course.

come monday, mishella and i part ways and my sister and her bf send me off back to the bay...but not before driving me around some key architectural landmarks for my fix. we eat mouthwatering korean bbq in japantown and my journey continues to the bay area as i catch a flight midday. jules and her bro bj pick me up and later in the night we have happy hour at gordon biersch in palo alto and meet up with edison. i take an obligatory pit stop at IKEA and finally meet up with my family in union city...at the kabiling household. i engage in more rock band before the night ends and try to get reasonable sleep while recovering from my crazy weekend.

it's tuesday and i bart to the city to meet up with jhimelle. we catch a meal by golden gate park and do many rounds on a street bike before heading to the san francisco shopping center for happy hour with cil and adrian. after happy hour...i hit up urban outfitters, h&m, and dsw shoe warehouse before they close at 9pm. jhimelle and i are off for more rock band at her place where her boyfriend cooks us a hearty breaded pork chop meal before i take the midnight train back to my family.

wednesday, i hit the roads solo and am back on the freeway. i get a haircut and network with my old stylists. they want to come to guam in august and i happily offer my hospitality. i get a pedicure and meet up with grace dolor at pf changs for happy hour and dinner. before heading home, i cruise the mall to visit forever 21 and steve and barry's.

on thursday, i join my sister in bringing my nephew to school. she later drives me to hayward to join jules at her apartment and we start our day late by having thai food in palo alto. we drive to the city for happy hour to meet with phuc dao and irma cayannan and her fun company. we take over stef's sports bar and close it down happily inebriated. on our way to the car, we take a walk through 111 minna to mingle with complete strangers and look at nameless yet notable art.

it's now friday and i'll be meeting with old bosses for lunch. i will be having happy hour in san francisco with friends. i will be joining jules for dancing beyond the east bay.

saturday my family is throwing me an early birthday bbq where about 40 people will be at our house.

on sunday i depart to honolulu where i will land and squeeze in a beach outing, a bbq with friends, and dinner with a night out before flying back to guam.

my 10 days away from guam has been insanely eventful and i can't wait to go home and be with kylan and get back to work.

island hopping

so i took that forsaken island hopper route using my one pass miles and it wasn't as bad as what others have described. i've never seen any of the other islands in micronesia and hopping through chuuk, phonphei, kosrae, majuro, and kwajelin before making it to honolulu was something that i actually appreciated. the flights were brief and i got to stretch in between. the longest flight leg was from kawajelin to honolulu, which took about 4.5 hours.

i'm here in HNL til friday morning and making the most of it.

nutty at 3am

i have been awake since 5am and probably only got about 3 hours of sleep before then. i am attempting to stay awake before getting on a plane to the land of aloha and eventually, sunny california.

it is 3am and i am waiting for the last load of laundry to be done. the nutty part is nothing i've claimed so far. the nutty part is that i am going to spend the rest of my night/morning at the office so i can maximize my time before heading to the airport. i am traveling with only one article of a wheeled carry-on and 2 pairs of shoes...it can be considered blasphemy against my wardrobe.

working my way back to you

sotd : working my way back to you babe

yes it's true - but i'll be back here, real soon.

in the next week...i'll be in the air for a total of 45 hours so that i can touch down and mingle amongst old and new friends in honolulu, san diego, la, and san francisco.

it's going to be a whirlwind trip like i never knew.

i'll be busy updating my blog and stay connected through my sprint phone and will be living off all the adrenaline....

and in early celebration of my 29th birthday.

I had just gotten off the phone with my trusted comrade and even told him to have a nice Sunday afternoon. But not even one hour later, I have no choice but to beckon. Nobody offered to help....even with my son, my lovely friend and her lovely dog, and me all helpless and in a bathing suit....LOL.

mo' disney

we closed the park down....we were on space mountain past midnight. my nightlife aspirations had to be pushed aside when my rendezvous partners fell through. this is our picture from buzz lightyear's ride...and I SERIOUSLY SUCK!!!! can i tell you once i bowled 17 in ten frames. that's got to be a record of some sort. i may suck but i suck well.

this visit also inaugruated kylan's first ever REAL ROLLER COASTER experience. i was a bit harsh in coaxing him to get on but in the end it all came down to making sure his mom wasn't cooler than he was. we triumphed california screamin, the matterhorn, splash mountain, and space mountain among all the other must-see's. this year's newest attraction is finding nemo and that will have to wait because people were seriously in line for 2 hours to get on. i'll put that on my list of "things to come back for".

keep up with me

today after work i am going to sea salt for $1 oysters at happy hour and i am super excited. immediately after dinner, i jetset to la for a night out with whomever i can salvage. tomorrow is disneyland with the familia and a celebration for beloved brother in law. saturday night i drive to san diego for another night out and prepare to dock a boat at 530 am, where we will go on a sport fishing adventure over to mexico's waters. then it's back up to la to have dinner with family and drive back to the bay. *whew. i'm tired.

its all about the suntory

yesterday phuc and i had happy hour at B. this restaurant is situated in the picturesque Yerba Buena Gardens and i wanted to return since my last visit around my birthday. it was the perfect choice because the bartender was absoultely indulging. he did a lot more than serve us drinks because the drinks he served were the best of its kind. my virgin palette got treated to the best in class of rum, whisky, and mezcal. even better was his very own creation, a white chocolate martini that was just heavenly. i'm going to be returning as much as possible so that i can learn that drink inside and out and then make it for everyone else....well just the special people. other than the dessert, another advantage last night was actually being able to sleep the entire night. i had the best sleep ever. it might have been all that fine alcohol in my system but i couldn't complain.

INTERNATIONAL

on a whim i decided to divert our layover in NRT to the Ueno Downtown area in Tokyo.Kylan and i took a 1.5 hour ride on a local train to the Suigetso Hotel. its about 10pm so i have yet to orient ourselves with our surroundings. supposedly there are temples, a park, zoo,しょっぴんg.....so ill have a ball exploring. leaving guam was not a goodbye....i have made peace with my decision. now to make peace with parting with sunny and lovely california.

withdrawal

i miss my olympus 720sw. deeply. literally.... i cannot go underwater without it and it was what made it so awesome. it was lost the night of my birthday party and has never turned up after a staff member turned it in. now i have my minolta and it's not just the same. if i had more funds, i would replace my olympus but woe is me. anyways...
i'm pleased that i was able to do everything i intended while i was in manila. i met up with old friends, visited my family headquarters, enjoyed relaxing dips in the pool with kylan, and rejoiced in more than enough shopping steals and deals. there was also sight-seeing at old historic sites and new resorts and finally...all the food to my heart's content. i will have to post pictures later because i failed to bring my camera charger and had to use my mom's. she is still in her motherland and i won't be able to upload until then.
now that i am back on guam...its time to get into the full swing of being home. my arrival last week was interrupted by my weekend preparations and i have 3 more weeks ahead of me. i feel i've already maximized my nightlife explorations, unfortunately. the crowds are not so reliable and neither are the bartenders. i can, however, count on a cheap bar tab or free drinks being graciously offerred throughout the night. there is no place for dancing as the scene seems to have simmered down to bar-hopping and band-watching. i am truly a stranger in my own home as there are barely any familiar faces to be found. the good part is seeing the regulars on a nightly basis and being able to make due quickly, with even the new faces to familiarize with.
my high school class has also attempted to gather recently and although the turnout wasn't optimal, there is still much brainstorming to be done. i won't be here for the main event in july but i'll do what i can to help toward that. i am planning our reunion events in the mainland for labor day weekend.
as for my friends, it is admittingly a true challenge to get them out all at once or even just out period. they are wrapped up in their own family and work obligations to schedule time out of their ordinary routines. even my coordination super powers won't get them out of the house.
today will be a beach day and workout day for sure and i'll be working on getting browner. not just tan....brown. i feel as if i'm gleaming white when i am in the crowd. i will also be attempting pilates at the local studio because i sure do miss my pilates studio back home.

tokyo a no-go

not even my prettiest pouty face could get me out of having to pay an extra 4000Y for my hotel room in Japan. i requested a single and considered myself a single but apparently 10 year-olds don't get much slack round there.
alas, our long trek home has finally come to fruition and beyond and now at 430am, i am apparently not even remotely close to being adjusted.
last night i went to happy hour and had fun but i had a big question mark....where are my friends? in fact, it was more like like a where the F are my girlfriends? lol....this is not anger or bitterness speaking but its actually a humorous acceptance of life as it is. it's thursday night...and no one seemed to be returning calls. luckily i was in the company of 7 people that kept me distracted. for a first night "out", it was actually perfect. there were drinks, familiar faces, and delectable yummies.
my first obligation yesterday was paying a visit to my bff's little boy. i was pleased that he warmed up to me almost instantly and his giggles and silly faces melted away my jet lag. i must share a skin-crawling detail from my visit, though. as baby boy was happily prancing around the room, i stopped him from putting an unknown in his mouth....only to discover that this unknown was actually a dried-up gecko skeleton!!! where it came from we don't know but his mommy and i were equally shocked and disgusted as he stood there wondering why chaos suddenly ensued. i actually wish i took a picture of the vile thing before we threw it away....believe me, it's blogworthy.

Another truly whirlwind adventure has passed. after my pilates obligation on saturday morning, kylan and i stormed off to lalaland to be with little sister and her bf. i drove there in record time....4.5 hours!! and it took the same exact time to return. it was all about experiencing food wherever we went. churros and sausages with sundried tomatoes in venice beach; tapas and sangria in old pasadena; fresh seafood in redondo beach...then there was pinkberry yogurt and taiwan boba in between. there was also the griffith park observatory where we saw clear sweeping views of the usually-smoggy vision. the catch is that saturday night was also supposed to be a quick escape for an uninhibited night out with friends in san diego. the missed connection happened because we had nowhere to park our butts for the evening. lovely gf of mine failed to follow through but we were fine and happy with the familia in la.

...takes me away

this beautiful weather has inspired me try something i've been wanting to do for a long time...sail! well i won't be the one doing the hard work. i'll just sit back, enjoy the scenery and i'm hoping for a st. paddy's day honorary beer under the sun. inspired by Josie, I'm going to make a sailing playlist to take it all in.

dying from hair dye!!!

i knowingly dyed my hair back to its original color to be in winter mode but mostly to prevent having to touch up lighter strands in the future. i've previously had severe allergic reactions to hair dye and this has been the last 4 times i've dyed my hair. it took four times to scare me because, while i warned my stylists of getting hair dye on my sensitive scalp, it adhered and went underneath my skin on the backside of my neck, my forehead, and my ears. now i'm experiencing the repercussions by having a swollen neck, bumpy forehead, and enlarged and raw ears (sorry so gross!). this was by far the most severe reaction i've had and had quite a scare as i stayed up making myself even crazier. i realize i am allergic to paraphenylenediamine and while it is extremely common to be allergic to this chemical responsible for giving hair dyes permanence, it can also be fatal! i've never had such an assortment of pills prescribed to me at once....i had 5 pills to ingest at once! - a steroid for the inflammation, an antibiotic for the infection, and an antihistamine for the allergy. on top of this i have a steroid shampoo for my scalp and a topical steroid for my skin. i really did bring this on to myself but that's what i gotta do to get rid of the fug roots.beauty is pain!!
oh i'd have to add that to add to the science experiment of a sight i am....i have bandaged my ears entirely and am sporting a do-rag while at home. it's great that i could laugh about it because i really am a funny sight.

guam in a nutshell

Seven days on Guam is the shortest I've ever been home and it's also been awhile since (1998) I've spent Christmas at home. Christmas shopping is stressful enough but trying to get last minute christmas stuff checked off your list is virtually impossible when you've got to scramble to several different places just to get even the simplest of things. A simple trip to Target woulda sealed the deal for my holiday scrambles but it sure was a lot more complicated than that.

All Sorts of Luck

Lately I've had some good karma come my way:

In my of my brokest of broke moments last week...I went thorugh the drive-thru at Wendy's and handed them my card only to get it handed it back with a receipt that says I paid in "Cash"

On the same day, I called for take-out at PF Chang's in Fremont and when I picked my food, the host said my order was on the house since I was his last ticket of the night

Last week I went to get my car Smog-Tested and since it was their "Grand Opening" I got the test done for $49, including the certificate

In Vegas - I rented a car for a day and paid $25. But they had some customer service issues and credited me the cost of my cab ride when I returned the car...$20.70. So I rented the car for only $5

On Monday, I went to Best Buy to return Guitar Hero I because I meant to buy Guitar Hero 2. I was bummed to find out they were sold out but felt lucky when the woman in front of me in the returns line was returning...Guitar Hero 2!! Suc-cess!

And finally on our 11-hour flight to Tokyo....I thought my luck changed when my seat had vomit on the belt.. The flight was delayed but not for long when they informed me that I would sit in business class! But I was sad that exbf wasn't next to me. He had to cover up the vomit seat but the stewardess gave him free beer thoughout the duration of the flight.

51 hrs in nyc and 22 hours to get home

i've done my share of whirlwind adventuring but its even better when you have 6 other people to delight in the hustle and bustle with. we invaded the big city and romeo's new york life last weekend and it couldn't have been more perfect. the weather was mild and i got to check off a lot of things on our itenerary. if it weren't for our gracious tour guide, it wouldn't have been as successful. i have to post pictures soon to show off our ninja dining, bar hopping, and city-scaping....oh and the fattest squirrel you've ever seen.

waiting for wii

getting up at 4am is not even half as bad as those who've been camped out since friday morning to get their hands on nintendo's new wii. i did my share of calling all the stores in the vicinity that would be stocking it and our diligence proved to be worthwhile. we got to the walmart parking lot in Tracy at 5am and found a cluster of tents. we were quickly discouraged from waiting as a bystander approached us to tell us there were only 26 units. the night before i called and was told there would be 60. there were actually 28 and joie got the last one. so we were still 2 short in our hunt.
across the way was costco and they had said they were gonna have 48 in stock without any guarantees. the great part was that it was only 8 am and there was nobody in line. after a breakfast run, we came back to being numbers 6,7, and 8 in line and with encouraging news from the costco employee that they did indeed have 48 and were ready to be distributed when they open at 10. joie was able to score an additional set and exbf and ambrose were happy campers....$1800 later (750 (console, accessories, and games + 350 ( costco bundles with 2 games) x 3).

JT part deux

Thanks to lovely friends....seven of us will be watching JT doing his live-action gyrating on stage. I would like to say I feel like a teeny bopper but even when I drooled over Justin while watching 3 N'Sync concerts and then again when he toured with Christina Aguilera...I felt out of my league amongst screaming teenagers. Now that he's brought Sexyback....the more mature Justin is surely not kiddie material so good riddance to anything coyful. He's 25...that's just a 2-yr difference so the possiblities do exist, says Cameron D.

weekend with sister

joie splurged on the familia as we checked in saturday morning to the marriott in downtown. the intent was to watch the blue angels roar by from our hotel room but we were diverted to the new extension of the San Francisco Shopping Center. it's a shame i didn't have my camera because it was definitely worthy of photographing. it redefines san francisco's urban experience and shopping standards. i'll have to make an excuse to go back equippped with money and a camera....then i can give my full review.

a dose of friends

it was a refreshing weekend in san diego where i did my usual jam-packed (is this word considered chaudy by the way.....sure feels like it?) scheduling. i had kylan and gracey to share the joys of "mimi's way to travel"....endless outing, scarce sleep, and indulgent fun. my only regret would be forgetting to bring my bathing suit to hang out at the beach longer. i miss the beach and san diego's la jolla shores brought me peace of mind. it was great being in the company of girlfriends, hazel & jesy, and kylan.

weekend love

another ambituous weekend that i've conquered has passed and it consisted of getting drunk and bar hopping in Costa Mesa, bachelorette-partying in San Diego, and grubbing on some SERIOUS chamoru food. i'm glad to be home but i wish my stomach was big enough to retain that food i had on Sunday with my sister. the bachelorette party was stripper-less yet fun. i was a club whore with 4 club-entry stamps still fading on my wrists. i regret missing out a baby shower for my dear friend. i did however take part in the planning logistics and favor-making.
this is an abridged version..time to go to sleep.

the skydiving deets

to elaborate from where i left off earlier this week.... i finally picked up the photo cds in which i developed our 35mm stills and i was wildly impressed by the quality and clarity of the images!! mind you, i haven't turned in a roll of film for developing in years and i am painfully behind in catching on to the convenience of photo cds. here i was thinking i'd have to archive my negatives and scan prints. the total package offered at the parachute center was well worth it because they were truly pros at everything and even better my shameful tongue was outta the way in the photos haha! if you'd like to see em:

tongue diving

11 out of 48 people whom i invited successfully followed through on their commitment to sky dive with me on sunday and not a single person regretted the experience because it was undoubtedly the most exhilirating experience we've all had. apparently being #s 91 - 103 on a given Sunday in May was not considered busy for the parachute center...as we had thought it was indeed a busy day. arriving there and seeing the operation while anticpating your turn eased the anxiety...there were groups going in and out repeatedly and none came out with looks of terror. the professionals were truly experienced and many were at the stunt-level of skydiving. it was jeffrey who had taken the first dive followed by me and exbf. the second group was hazel, jessy, kouchen, and danielle and finally the 3rd plane was paul, gracey, skip and norma. there is a lot of footage to add here as i am still compiling our breathtaking and proud moments but for now i must tell you about my tongue incident!
being the first to fall from 13,000...i was much more afraid when my moment came. it didn't help that my instructor was saracastic and found it utterly humourous to mess with my head...acting afraid and inexperienced and telling me he was just gonna push me out! but i bravely laughed it off everytime and frowned over to exbf from accross the narrow plane. his last set of instructions were to "look at the camera and stick your tongue out"....in my effort to follow instruction closely i didn't even think twice before proceeding to stick out my tongue out as i was exactly told. so there goes it....i stuck my tongue out as he told me even before i jumped and as i lept from the plane...only to provide much comic relief after and discovering he meant stick my tongue out as i was free falling to taunt the camera with playfulness! on the way down, which was about 2 miles in 60 seconds, my goggles were pressed up against my face that i could barely open my eyes. although i could see....i was mostly squinting! to add to my chagrin, the last frame on the dvd freezes on me and my lovely long tongue as i took my brave leap! i will do it again...and have learned many valuable lessons....to smile at the camera, loosen my goggles, stick my tongue at the right places, and not wear a scoop neck tank top. this was an instance indeed of where i am thankful for having little apples as opposed to watermelons...!

turning 27

what's great about 27? jumping out of a plane 13,000 feet from the sky. i found a site in Lodi for a good price and am trying to chorale a large group so look out! my beloved TARcon is also on my birthday this year but there won't be any rubbing elbows with Phil or meeting the millionaires as i have just started a new job. that's right...my traffic-less and effortless 25-minute commute just started today and so has a new job title, new firm, and new salary. hello 27, pleased to meet you.

March 28, 2006

a day in the 4th grade

i took friday off to spend most of the day with ky's class field trip to the oakland museum and it was indeed a day filled with observations. two minutes after arriving i meet a parent in the hallway who, upon realizing i was kylan's mom, gasps in disgust at how young i look (or am). she seriously held her hand up to my face and said "ugh you're so young!". Ooookay...next akward moment - there is a line of parents waiting for homeroom to conclude for the bus ride and hrmm..i don't have anyone to be drawn to. i feel really outta place and realize that if i want to be included in any conversation with the other parents, i had to break out the tagalog and join the filipino moms. i kept watch of kylan and two other boys and it was really cool seeing kylan interact with his friends and i was glad we all got along. some classmates on the bus thought i was his sister and then i got extra cool points for lending my ipod video for viewing pleasure. the field trip itself was not so structured and not all the content in the museum was appopriate for 9 year olds...namely a gestural statue of a nude woman sitting down with her legs spread and photographs close-up of the buttocks or nipple area. i also went way overboard in packing lunch for us. some brought a bag of chips and maybe a simple sandwhich but somehow i ended up packing 2 rolls of sushi, some asian pears, 2 bottles of iced tea, 2 snack packs of pringels. and i also left a tuna sandwhich and breakfast panini in the car that did not get eaten. ky also pointed out his crush and that was cool, too.

osha standoff

saturday night was pretty mellow with the exception of our nigihtcap at Osha Thai Noodle House. since we were in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, seeing sirens and SFPD gather outside didn't even get our table's attention until people next to us were starting to take notice. After eating, my first priority was to pay but while waiting at the counter for my credit card to run, a few people next to me were paying extremely close attention to the cops pointing their guns in OUR direction. As I noticed some girls ducking and grimacing in horror...my instinct was to duck down while i waited for my credit card voucher. Then in a matter of seconds, the SFPD stormed in with their guns and commanded everyone to "FREEZE and PUT YOUR HANDS UP". all i could do was stay fixated on exbf across the room while they explained that there was a report of someone possessing a gun in the restaurant and they were following protocol in response. After a few questions amidst the quiet room, they cleared everyone and left soon after. Sadly, the cops seemed to have gone straight for the one black guy in the asian restaurant who was unsuspecting otherwise and it seemed there really was no apparent threat after all...thankfully. I was terrified for those brief moments while being in the presence of those big guns that i closely watched as the SFPD perused the premises. i 'm just glad we were all safe. so glad...that i didn't let myself become bogged down by the parking ticket on my car when we returned.

high efficiency rating

Yesterday was another triumph of a busy day for me. It was an uncommon and not-so-desirable early rise for me at 725 am to accompany Joie and Joshy to a hair appointment yesterday morning but I was more than happy to do it. I had a part-time job prospect to visit at 1015 am and since the salon and the office were in close proximity, I figure multi-tasking was definitely an option. The salon was awesome but the job prospect was an utter disappointment and a shady operation. There was some cult-like recruiting going on - the posting called for a part-time job in financing for a fortune-100 company....but it was definitely a questionable and suspicious operation once I witnessed it. After the productive morning, Kylan and I went to Berkeley to have Indian food in company of a familiar face. We had extremely delilcious and affordable food....and I would have to say Indian food is one that I rarely indulge in and it was Kylan's first time. After Berkeley, I made a 2-hr drive to Patterson with a stop in Dublin on the way. Finally we made it home at 930 and I stayed up to babysit our 6-month old nephew!!

recently....

Lately been too busy recovering from illness and I'm back in full swing living my life of not being sick and indoors. Other than securing our moving plans and trying to fill up my 60GB ipod, I've actually been out and about. Last weekend I couldn't turn down the chance to party at the DOT again....saw some people I haven't seen in awhile and I got to go out with Edison and the girls...and act silly and drunk. And NO, I didn't drive YIPPEEEE.

On Thursday I fulfilled my vow to do SF Dine About Town and went to Azie with exbf, Phuc, and Ryan. Even we haven't been in each other's company in awhile and it was nice. Our meal was worth what we paid for but I don't think I'll go back there again for full price. While the food was indeed great...the portions were small and the dessert was not all-around great. ALTHOUGH one choice offered, a pecan-crusted pear bread pudding was exceptional...it was served with carmelized pears and mango-ginger sorbet on the side.

aziepic1.jpg

I was also able to update the Guammie website. It's not quite the full makeover that I wanted but I cleaned it up. I'm hoping to get an event in February but I'm still searching for the right spot. My first choice is actually not as great as I thought it would be.

Finally my coworker brought a Grapple to work, its a grape-flavored Apple and it's really really juice and pungent. I highly recommend it....although be prepared to pay twice as much.

Santa Claus, Karma, and God

To whomever or whatever should be attributed for the most advantageous fallacy thus yet....a FREE 60GB Video IPOD happened upon me yesterday.
On Christmas Eve, Hazel and I went to the Apple Store to purchase a Nano for a present. When I paid. I told the clerk I didn't need a bag and held the Nano in my hand. He handed Hazel a bag with my receipt. Until yesterday, I discovered that he had inadvertently placed another ipod with my receipt in the bag he handed over. I was cleaning out my car when I noticed that the bag from the Apple store laying on the floor had more than a receipt inside!!
I shall claim it as mine and my overdue ipod update has finally been bestowed upon me. Thank You God....and Santa...and Karma....and the erring Cashier.

there and back again

The first of my friends (in my age group and from the Bay Area) who deicded to take the leap got married in Lake Tahoe this past weekend and the 3 hour drive each way to witness the tear-jerker was well worth it!

here comes the weekend

Seems like I'll have stories on the road this weekend as I'll be venturing to Vegas again. Most people associate Vegas getaways with drunken stupor, gambling, and perhaps naked people. None of those are on my agenda this weekend. I'm more excited about getting on the open road in exbf's G35. Lucky for me, he gets the lazy bone on long drives and I'm know driving on the 5 will be a lot more enjoyable. I think "LOST" seeped into my brain because I seriously kept losing things....my cell phone, my ATM card, and even my ipod (and just this morning, my earring). I'll have to admit I was partially excited about possibly HAVINGTO upgrade my ipod. As cute as the mini is and as tempting as the nano is...its not practical for me at this point. Spending time filtering through my music to make sure I don't go over 4GB has become tedious. The good news is that I found everything I "lost" temporarily. And I finally did finish all 29 (?) episodes. (Wow thats a lot of time at my laptop) And my cupcakes...gone before I could photo shoot. Shucks now I have a good excuse to bake again.

success

The initial outlook for all my weekend plans seemed grim but everything worked out. We had a family dinner The Dead Fish on Friday night. It didn't seem like we'd get to dinner because of all the traffic on Hwy 80 but the dinner sure did make up for it. I cannot recommed this restaurant enough....even better prime rib than House of Prime Rib and THE BEST crab ever. We even made it just in time to meet everyone at HiFi in San Francisco afterwards... early enough to get in without cover. We found great parking and had some stories to walk away for the evening. I was so happy that exbf came out and danced! The best part was that we were with Angelica (Don's lil' sister), who unfortunately had to return to Iraq today. On Satruday, I made latiya for my company picnic, only to have 94% of it untouched. This was because I arrived towards the end of it and there was just too much food. We attempted to go to Dolce on Saturday night. But after a much-too-lengthy wait in line, especially for Ryan and Bong, we headed to EZ5 - our new safe spot courtesy of Ryan. Everyone went home happy and that's always a good thing. This morning, I made it to a 3-hr sale at loehmann's and bought a top for $6.97! That's not all I bought and yes I've broken my vow to wait for H&M. I heard that the space won't be ready until January. However, a temporary space will be opened for the Holidays, with a limited selection of items. This, I imagine, will add even more chaos to its opening I'm sure. My proudest moment was getting to watch the Blue Angels not just on time....but without getting caught in traffic, and with a great parking spot and viewing locale. Talk about luck! We were in the city at exactly 3pm and was back to Union City by 515. Even better, we had a bbq feast waiting for us at the Carpos. Success all the way around! See all the pics on the my flickr sidebar.

no licencia

Earlier tonight on my usual run for tea at Fantasia, I had an unfortunate yet amsuing circumstance. I was waiting to turn out of the parking aisle, and an old hooptie backed into me. The whole family stepped out to face this debacle, because you know I'm so fierce! So here's the deal - no ingles, no licencia, no insurance (i don't know the insurance en espagnol)! Their faces of desperation had me feeling bad and luckily the damage was minimal. I will be callling for some cash and I hope to get it. They plead that they would pay in cash in lieu of reporting (for good reason, i'm sure). exbf says I'm too nice and shoulda called the popo but I would really feel evil for sending Papa home to Mexico for scratching up my car. Seriously!

update

So it seems my friday nor my weekend remained "unfufilled" as I had previously claimed. My biggest accomplishment was sleeping in until 2pm yesterday. On Friday, just as I was sulking about having to bore myself at home, Jules and Company show up at my door. I was able to go to Jade Bar, Sake Lab, and the Bubble Lounge. Last night at EZ5, we had a no-frills evening and really had nothing to complain about. I managed to get my phone replaced yesterday as well. I'm so glad Sprint considered my damage under warranty and avoided having to pay for a new phone. I am eyeing and envious of Ryan's new toy, the PPC. I'm lured to the idea of having an all-in-one functional and sizable gadget. if it were only pink, i'd love it :) Right now I am downloading new ringers and such to make my phone replacement girly. Just can't help it!

unfulfilled friday

after work i had drinks with my coworkers at Paragon. Of course because I had to drive home, I had to restrain myself. Tonight I was really hoping to hit the city with some girly girls. But unfortunately the girly girls I know are tired from work and not as motivated to paint the town (is it red?...I'm no good at figures of speech, I don't know why I use em!). If anyone's down for some bonafide urban exploration, by all means, indulge me! Here's my list of places to experience: (Some I've been to before and want to go back, like right now!
Roe, had many recommendations for partying here...I'm sure one day
Jade Bar - I've been here before with the guys and the bathroom is a great conversation piece
Hotel Biron, looks like a good place for a ladies night - where my ladies at?
Bliss, my all-time safe-spot - neighborhood feel and great ambiance
Magnet, great name is enough for me to want to go!
Anyway tomorrow I'm going to EZ5 and there's a lot of stuff going on this month. Its still warm enough to enjoy the nights! And warm is relative.

again

get ready to read my road ramblings again. i have an 8 hour drive ahead of me and i know i should be sleeping but i got caught up multitasking. i have a wedding to get to by 5pm and i guess, at this point, that's all that matters. but im excited to get the last of warm weather i can get this summer and to party with mishella in san diego. i've never experienced the night life in san diego and i have yet to find out if such exists. greatest part so far is the wedding is right next to the salk institute!! wooohoo louis kahn here i come :) i'm gonna try body boarding if someone is industrious enough to baby me in the water. its already been getting cold up here..i've had to break out my sweaters and wear a lined jacket this week!....and hazel says its still HAWT down there so i'm pretty excited. its already fall everywhere...its fall in retail too! where have all the bright summer colors gone? i'll be leaving in 3 hours..gonna try and rest my eyes for a bit. so if you're up anytime between 3am and 12pm...please call me! or maybe send me an IM on msn...it'll keep me alert:)

the change

decided to change my title since i've been wandering about lately. new york, guam, san diego, vegas, etc. soon going to dc in october, possibly hawaii in november, london for new years? maybe next year brazil with the girls, europe with my sister, high school reunion...who knows? who will go? these plans are all in the "talking" stage. talked about it, down to go, but nothing beyond that. anyway about vegas:

woohoo long drive!!
Originally uploaded by fabulousmimi.
Yes im driving! I had to keep myself entertained because I drove the entire way to and from Vegas. Well actually, got help for the last hour and a half on the way into Vegas. My cousin Holly and Kylan were just dead weight in my car. I had to dance, rap, take pictures, and play dj while driving. Going there was a cinch but the return was exceptionally lengthy. Nothing I couldn't handle, though. I'm just glad I left early enough to catch the Entourage finale on Tivo and get to bed. I'm not tired at all. More details later.

vegas it is...and the 4th grade

finally made up mind for this weekend. i am driving down this evening with the rest of the gang, kylan included. he started the fourth grade this week, which sounds daunting to me. i've been grilling him this past week with paragraphs, long division, and fractions. finally the light bulb in his head turned on and he GETS IT! i remember the fourth grade so clearly. i had the meanest teacher (RIP). she would pinch me with her sharp nails and make the whole class write essays when we misbehaved. my proudest achievement was memorizing all the presidents and their years in office. i hated religion class because that was the year we had to make a jesse tree. i barely remember what the hell that is. kylan needs religion classes. i feel bad because i can't afford catholic school but do i really wanna raise him to be a hypocrite? not that catholics are hypocrites. i guess what im trying to say is catholics teach you how to memorize without really being conscious of faith itself. so all these prayers, strories, etc are memorization at this age. when he was in CCD for his 1st holy communion, i remember thinking wow they have it easy. religion was one of the toughest subjects in school but not because it was hard to understand but because it demanded a lot of work. i guess hypocrite is too strong of a word. i will put him back in CCD in the 5th grade, when he is a bit more mature and can comprehend spirituality more.
anyway about VEGAS...my agenda is planned out. brunch and shopping on saturday. take kylan to gameworks in the afternoon. get ready for Rum Jungle in the eveing. Sunday will be the Hoover dam and a bbq. monday is home. i've given myself the responsiblity of being bartender this weekend and i'm excited to bust out all my palatable concoctions.

adventures in mexico

well not mexico...the flea market, actually. hazel, holly, and i spent about 4 hours there on sunday and my oh my, i'm considering it my new haven. there were fashion finds, furniture deals, and fresh food. my favorite steal were dolce and gabana shades for $5...which earned me 3 comments during lunch today. some guy said "wow, those are superhero shades!"....for FIVE BUCKS! all i know is that the three of us spent about 2 hundred bucks altogether. and my share was only $40.

August 1, 2005

yes i am crazy

before even being 100% back to normal, i went and messed with my state of recovery. i drove to san diego for the day. wow i'm like milo now! at least i got to see the fancy new house that hazel just moved into with her friends and its really overkill for college students. it seems to be about 3000 sq feet and in its in the middle of a golf course, for heaven's sake. poor landlord has to play daddy to 4 useless girls. i discovered that he succumbed to lowering their rent, mowing their lawn, and voluntarily adding a shower door in their rest rooms because as hazel put it, he says "girls like to splash their hair around". LOL. One disgusting detail is that there was a rat gladly parading around their living room. At first her roomate said it was a mouse but when i saw it, it's far from a mouse! It was big and black and climbed surfaces. Everyone said I was ambituous and insane for doing the day trip. We stopped at Walmart and Hooters on the way down. YES hooters (in Burbank). It was the only thing open at 11pm at night. Kylan told me that he felt he shouldn't have been brought to a bar. LOL. I told him we were there for their famed chicken wings!! Finally arrived at 2am and slept til 10. Explored downtown San Diego for a bit by visiting the Naval Carrier Museum, the USS Midway. Then we stopped by Seaport Village to get a kite for Kylan. Finally made it to Jeng's BBQ at the beach and it was quite nice. I've never went to a warm beach in the continental US! Kylan even went in the water. It was ice cold but because the sun was beaming, it was a nice feeling. The food was great and it was a nice day. After leaving at 5pm, we went to the Salk Institute. Its a huge architecture pilgrimage destination and it was closed but I parked at the service entrance and went straight to somewhere I'm sure we weren't supposed to go. We stole some nice shots until the scientists started to look at us funny and we ran off and drove away. It was quite hillarious. I had a 2hr delay in LA. I HATE LA!! Dumb traffic. Ended up ending my drive at 3AM (reminding you that I started at 5pm!) and again, dropped dead to wake up at 7. I'm at work and alive. you'll find my pictures amusing. my picture of the salk institute is BADAASSSSSS!

the trix

you can enjoy guam if you know where to go and im slowly learning where to go and what to do. first of all...free wireless at the outrigger. its super comfortable and there's a bar, beach, and pool within reach. of course i wouldn't want to get caught in the pool for not being a registered guest at the hotel. if you jog at about 615pm...you can catch all the beachside shows on the sidelines without paying a cent, including fire shows and island singers. this i learned from hazel: there's a bar in the 888 gameroom that serves any cocktail drink for $3. you can get all you can eat prime rib with a buffet included at PIC on Mondays for only $20. you can use any fancy hotel restroom if you hate public restrooms. the restrooms here don't have any toilet seat covers and i am proud to say that i have them stashed in my purse. gameworks has a very comprehensive selection of games...and they have unlimited play for only $10 until 5pm. jungle java at the outrigger is open 24 hours and they serve excellent barista drinks 24 hours a day. okay thats all i can think of for now....i'll learn more as i go along. 2 more weeks left. this thursday evening, i'm flying to the Philippines for some adventurous travelling while solo.

here on guam

so i'm here now and its hard to feel like home when i'm so used to the "comforts" of california. i'll risk sounding like a whiny biatch and bare the change in atmosphere. everything is still the same and its wednesday night...nothing to do, no one (that i'm in contact with) has choraled an event for the evening. tomorrow my agenda consists of going to the beach at sunrise and making my rounds.
i hate dialup by the way!

more. delayed

oh yeah so as *ahem "someone" had pointed out, i have been slow to follow-up on my promised "stories of new york" blog. as if anyone really does care to read the ramblings of my life, here it is. but first reasons why i can have excuses for being too "busy" lately. it did take me all of the weekend after the trip to recover. but work has been busier than ever...i've got more than a handful of projects to tend to and this has truthfully never happened before. this is, by far, not a complaint. being exceptionally busy gives me more confidence by the ounce and for once in the start of my bustling architectural career, i feel validated. maybe it's all suppopsed to be an answer to "am i getting old?" but last week's birthday reality call was quite telling. no big celebratory fiascoes for a reason....i simply didn't feel the need to. yes life is already complete without a night at the club. it's not like i've got a big posse to coerce into a wild night out. and lastly, tuesdays aren't the best nights for a wild way about town. but enough of the bore that my life may be sounding lately and back to the real fun i had in new york, if its still relevant.

part deux . done.

so that was my last (ad)venture to nyc because i don't think i'll ever be able to gather that amount of people or join in on another or more important Amazing Race Finale event. But then again, never say never. I survived a weekend of what I thought was going to be too much testosterone for me. And thank goodness that the hustle and bustle of new york city served as an apt buffer for making the weekend trip successful. More later. Still recovering.

my TARriffic night

So I had to downgrade my amazing race dream from being an actual racer to meeting the racers and having that fulfilled was awesome. Unfortunately, Phil (the host) and last night's winners were a no-show. The plan was to follow-up my Amazing Race experience by setting up post on the Early Show for the million dollar check hand-off but uhm, jepp is comatose right now. I went with a former coworker and she somehow leaked that I had quit my job so we can go to TARcon together and then everyone was calling me "the crazy girl". It was a great party because you get to talk to, shake hands with, take pictures, hug......and go into the restroom with them! A racer from the 2nd season "abducted" me and another attendee to the men's restroom to pose for a pic at the urinal and then later he signed my custom-made shirt (for autographs) with a little drawing of a penis and the words "play hard". If you know me, you'd know that I found that funny and absolutely appropriate. Pics to be posted later!

sleepless in New York

I don't know if this constitutes as "jet lag" but my timing is all out of whack. First of all, I only slept from 5pm to 8pm during the day, which I thought was a nap born from pure exhaustion as opposed to sleep deprivation (I say this after walking and exploring the city from 10 am to 5pm). So I was thinking that I would sleep sound like a baby and fall into nocturnal bliss...WRONG. I couldn't sleep - Finally shut my eyes at 430 am and am now awake at 615am. I first attributed my late sleep to California-time-liness but now I'm just perplexed as to why I can't get my body to be restful. I'm not even sleepy but instead full of energy and I'm afraid I might randomly collapse knowing that my body is so sleep-deprived. Meanwhile, Jepp seems to sleep soundly (hence the snoring) in spite of the clacking of my keyboard. So I thought I'd take the time to divulge in some bonafide New York observations from my first day.

new york! okay still prepping. been up since whenever mostly because i'm amped on espresso and also making goodies for TARcon...my long-awaited AMAZING RACE pilgrimage! Call me geek, fanatic, psycho...I love it all. I've somehow committed to making 200 booklets for this party and just the fact that it'll end up in the hands of former racers....makes me tingly!!! im ready to come out and party again. so come february 26, we shall celebrate like we never have because SERIOUSLY it's been too damn long. so long that people stopped asking. well as far as consistency goes....at least i'm starting up in february again. and this time around...i'm fully equipped with my very own digital camera...so no more "i don't have a camera" excuse when pictures or evidence is lacking from the night before. warm gloves/mitts - check, dorky skull cap - check, opaque wool tights - check, long knit scarf - check, thermal undershirt - check, knee-high boots - check! time to bundle up and bear the cold in dirtay dirtay new york.

January 20, 2005

fanatic

everyday i plan my trip to NY...my pilgrimage to the Amazing Race. I've even volunteered to assist with some aspect of planning. I've ordered a custom-made shirt to wear to the party, and I've been planning religiously....day-by-day, minute-by-minute agenda! This is the closest I might ever get to being on that damn show. Well one day I'll have my million so please don't make fun of me. This my geekiest pursuit yet....other than of course, exbf. *hee

swingin'

today i was mood swingin'. instead of sulking at home i decided to take kylan out. we went to the tech museum in san jose, which by the way is by one of my favorite architects, Ricardo Legoretta. i brought him there to see a Nascar Film on the huge IMAX dome. its always an awesome sight but i swear that screen can give you motion sickness. they're also playing harry potter there nightly and i can't fathom watching a "moving" movie like that for more than 2 hours. the 40 minute film alone today had me closing my eyes. i learned a lot about the history of the national association of stock car automobile racing....like what the hell that stood for. i decided to give myself a treat and head to McCormick and Schmicks, a huge and quite swank seafood place across the way and boy was it worth it. it was also very affordable...i had a dozen freshly shucked raw oysters, oyster soup-oysters in a fish broth with butter, cream, and garlic, (can you tell i love oysters??!), grilled skewered chicken, and calamari. i know you're thinking that's a lot of food. but kylan eats like a grown man. i was an oyster monger mostly. i feel bad because i was so moody when kylan was trying to make conversation with me. i think we did okay though. i took him out and he had a grand meal...i even let him order shirley temple. if i had an even bigger appetite of if exbf was with me....i woulda ordered the seared ahi, another seafood favorite i never refuse. all that food was only 40 bucks by the way. weird that i wasn't even in the mood for dessert, which i usually always make room for. last night i went to Pier 23 for the first time and it was a nice surprise. i had 2 red stripes (jamaican beer) and a malibu pine with grenadine (tastes like punch) and i got a decent buzz out of it...enough to distract me from my emotions and let me laugh a little. i almost booked one of our guammie parties there and am thinking of trying again...maybe for september. the outdoor setting overlooking the bay, the backdrop of telegraph hill, and the great acoustics of live reggae playing outside under the night sky was a relaxing touch. for a minute, i felt home.

August 2, 2004

my brave weekend

the only reason why i braved many tasks this weekend was because i kept thinking "i'm on the amazing race". we spent the weekend in Lake Whiskeytown, near Redding...about 4 hours away and i'm not as much of a girly girl as i thought. all those outdoor conditions and bumps in the night didn't really scare me. my overarching fear was the deep lake!! when floating on 100-feet deep water..i keep thinking...thats a 10-story building, i can fall to my death! swim you ask? well i've just always been intimidated by deep water! all those years in swimming class..i've strayed away from the deep end while completing my laps of breast strokes, the butterfly, etc...so exbf has to tell me "you're on the amazing race"...and thats how he convinced me to allow myself to be tossed around the inner tube from behind the boat or kayak across the lake...yes even past the deep end.

July 20, 2004

T G I T

thank god its tuesday. yay its time for the amazing race. on saturday my day was made ever so wonderful (is that even gramatically correct?) when my car was seemingly stolen. after pursuing my sushi craving....the spot where i had parked was empty! to my dismay, it was towed...apparently "part" of my bumper was parallel to where the curb dipped. so yeah $171 (thanks to margaret), a $20 cab ride, and 40 mins later ...we retrieved it. this, of course, didnt stop my agenda to look for my outfit for the evening. i spent $14 on a skirt that i didn't even end up wearing. its a good thing the party was fun or it woulda been a hellish night. or saturday woulda just been "the crappy day my car got towed"
