the family stone

i was looking forward to this movie because i expected it to be some great ephiphany of a movie to watch and of course i was curious and excited to witness SJP perform outside of my beloved SATC. i did see Failure to Launch and although that was a predictable date movie on many levels...i enjoyed the film fondly and was entertained by her "non-Carrie" character. but that's another review.

even Joie complained i was being overly analytical about this film....but i couldn't help it since it was so character driven and there were internal conflicts to reflect on. i wasn't wowed at first glance but it really did grow on me.
Sarah Jessica Parker plays a tightly-wound fiance of golden boy Everett and the movie takes place during a Holiday visit with his entire family. so there are comedic exploits of family dynamics, expectations, and those god-awful akward moments that no one looks forward to and the film brings them cross believably so. but what i can't believe is how "unaccepting" the family was toward her. while SJP's character did lack warmth (tightly-wound bun and bland color palettes on her wardrobe to match), you are left with the impression that she was mostly misunderstood. she had nothing against the front that the family had already put up. even worse was that the placed-on-a-pedastal Everett starts to become affected by his family's interventions.
you will only be able to absorb the movie's full intent by reflecting on the last scene....where family members have been displaced due to SJP's "forelorned "acts. as much of a perceived negative presence that the family had made her out to be...in the end it was her that had brought them to their ultimate fate and you learn that their acceptance had a price. in the present day they end up in happily-ever-after-land.
this was not the family i would have been glad to be a part of because i know i have no family members like those in the Stone's but i can see how outsiders aren't let in and how certain factors affect our fate.
don't worry i didn't give away the entire movie....the twist if you can call it that, has yet to be revealed when you put your thinking cap on and sit through it. i found the "twist" to be the most angering and disturbing part but then i've grown to appreciate it when i think about the writer's intentions. the movie is not heavy on the mind while watching so don't worry you'll get a laugh in there.
